California Girls’ Room Makeover – Easy Paint Ideas

April 15, 2017
  • Share

I am so proud of this little makeover design project I have been working on for the past few weeks. It’s a cute little California girls’ room makeover for my dear friends Barry and Samantha Nugent’s adorable daughters C and S.  The mom, Samantha, is an amazing realtor with a very good sense of style.  My design challenge was to create a shared room for two girls 12 and 7 years of age that they both could grow into – a room young enough for the 7 year old but adult enough for the preteen…and most importantly, a room their mom liked too!

For this fun decorating project, I partnered with BEHR® Paint to create a delightful girls’ bedroom. I wanted to use paint creatively in the space to make big impact.  My “clients” had one desire…”use pink”!  With that in mind, the first step to this room makeover was picking the right color…

BEFORE – The room was very simple…the color scheme was white and a very very very pale purple/lavender feature wall

AFTER – This is the room I designed with off white walls, a pink ceiling and a COCOCOZY Tower Court rug!

The first step was truly picking the right color.  The mom, SN, and oldest daughter C were very specific about using a “sophisticated” pink on the walls.  I am not a pink person but I went to the BEHR® Paint website and created my own custom color palette for this room makeover that ranged from white, to pink to blues.  I used their Paint Your Place Color Tool to see what the colors would look like in a room.

I knew I did not want to paint the walls pink because I did not want the room to look too saturated and too young.  In my mind, I associate an all pink room with a baby or very very young girl.  With two growing girls as the room owners, I felt that we needed to subtly incorporate the pink without over doing it.

I pitched SN and the girls on painting the ceiling pink and the walls an off white for a modern color block effect for the room.  Using the feature color on the ceiling instead of on a feature wall allowed me to incorporate the desired pink as a subtle accent.

BEHR® Premium Plus Ultra® Colors:
Cupcake Pink – Ceiling
Velvet Rope – Accessories
Original White – Walls

BEFORE – The room was cute but lacked a personality.  My two young princess clients are filled with personality so I had to give them a room to match.

DURING – This is the room during the makeover, all the furniture out and ready for the walls AND ceiling to painted!

AFTER – We added new bedding, cute wall accessories, and COCOCOZY Kip Pillows on the twin beds.

We added white ceramic wall art over each twin bed as a fresh neutral design touch.

BEHR® Premium Plus Ultra® Paints – We used a matte finish on the walls and ceilings.

Wood laser cut storage bins were painted Velvet Rope blue.  We gave each girl their own little storage for books, clothing, games, electronics or even toys.

One of the areas in the room I am most proud of is this little reading area where we stenciled a COCOCOZY textile pattern I designed directly onto the wall!  The contrast is so subtle but it is a great alternate to using wallpaper.

BEFORE – Across the twin beds, there is a little study desk nook in the room.

Was so exciting to see the first bit of stencil of this classic COCOCOZY Fence pattern I designed going up on the wall.  It was the first time I have ever taken one of my designs, had it made into a stencil and then used it on a project!  Love the end result.

There’s a very happy me after styling the room and adding the finishing touches.  Almost makes me want to be 12 again, so I could have a room like this!

Was so thrilled to hear that after all of the decorating, the girls were thrilled with their space!  I love the end result.  Made me very happy to give them this space.  Thanks to SN, BN and the girls for letting me makeover their room!  Thanks also to my COCOCOZY team, design assistants AC and IS, for helping out!

Onto the next design adventure…

Happy Saturday!

In contrast to where I slept as a young girl, that room is a dream. I would have loved to have a bright and airy room to call my own instead of drab dark carpets and drapes to match. I guess it’s because I was born in the 70’s. I think everyone’s room was like mine!

A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not overpowering, just enough to warm everything up, walls, upholstery, even the smallest details.
It shifts the mood completely. Calmer, softer, and a little more lived in.
Save this if you’re leaning toward softer, warmer spaces. 🌸

What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so hard to look away from is the deliberate clash Sophie Dries @sophiedries_ created and didn’t try to resolve.
The bones of the apartment are pure Haussmann: ornate cornicing, carved boiserie, a marble fireplace with a gilded mirror. Everything a 19th-century Parisian apartment should be. Then she placed a near-black dining table with brass-legged stools into the middle of it. A raw concrete-look bathroom behind the grandeur. Dark, sculptural objects on surfaces that were built for delicate things.
It works because she didn’t try to blend the two, she let them sit in contrast. The apartment feels lived-in and specific because of it.
→ Save this if you’re mixing old architecture with contemporary furniture.

From classic to modern, rustic to minimal, the pap From classic to modern, rustic to minimal, the paper lantern just fits. It softens the room, diffuses the light, and rounds out even the sharpest architectural edges without demanding any attention. 🏮
Are you into paper lanterns, or do you prefer a more structured statement light? 🧐

Streets of #Paris. 📍 Rue de Castiglione — Laid ouStreets of #Paris. 📍
Rue de Castiglione — Laid out under Napoleon in the early 1800s, this neoclassical street connects Place Vendôme to the Tuileries Garden in one clean, symmetrical line.
Place de Furstenberg — A tucked-away square in Saint-Germain-des-Prés that was once home to the painter Eugène Delacroix, and still feels like little has changed.
Les Antiquaires on Rue du Bac — A street with centuries of history, now best known for its cluster of antique dealers trading in furniture, paintings, and curiosities and home to @les_antiquaires_paris bistro which is an easy spot to grab a bite near the Seine.
Musée du Louvre — Built as a medieval fortress in the 12th century, it became a royal palace, then the world’s most visited museum, home to the Mona Lisa and tens of thousands of other works.
Église Saint-Sulpice — Paris’s second-largest church, with a gnomon installed inside to track the sun’s position and help calculate the liturgical calendar.
Les Deux Magots — The Saint-Germain café where Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre, and Hemingway once gathered, and a lasting symbol of Paris’s literary culture.
Place Vendôme — Commissioned under Louis XIV, this octagonal square is anchored by the Vendôme Column, cast from cannons captured at the Battle of Austerlitz.
Shops, people, and buildings that make you stop for a second and look up. Every corner feels different. Old, detailed, and full of life. Sometimes this is the best part. Just being here. ❤️

Nour Arida’s (@nouraridaofficial) Paris apartment Nour Arida’s (@nouraridaofficial) Paris apartment was designed to feel like a little piece of Beirut — a pied-à-terre that keeps her connected to Lebanon while living in France.
Architect Carl Gerges @carlgergesarchitects built the whole interior around warmth and softness: a caramel sofa, a pink kitchen, milky whites throughout. Nothing sharp, nothing cold. The palette reads as indulgent without trying. It’s the kind of space that feels like it was chosen for comfort first and aesthetics second, even though both are clearly considered.
What’s easy to miss is the restraint underneath it all. The softness works because it’s disciplined. Every piece earns its place in the same tonal story.
→ Save this if you’re building a warm, tonal interior from scratch.
