TE and I spent much of the weekend running around looking at floors and tile and searching for inspiration for our master bedroom and master bathroom in Malibu. Long story and I will tell you more about the house over the coming months. But as I mentioned in passing the other day, after months of searching, TE and I found a house in Malibu last year and now we are in the process of remodeling it! Woohoooo!
It has been a long journey. We started looking in 2013. We had been looking all over Los Angeles but had not really been looking in Malibu. I had lived in Malibu for a summer and have always loved it but we were both leaning more towards staying on the west side of town. Malibu wasn’t a real option. One day, however, after months of looking at homes and finding absolutely nothing, Malibu came up again. This time TE said he was open to checking out homes there and said “pick a couple to see”. I had sent him a picture and the listing for this house a few months before as a possible option in our house hunt but it fell off the radar – lucky for us it was still available. So, on a sunny Sunday last March, we headed out to Malibu to check out this house and one other. This was our first and only stop in Malibu. The minute we saw the house, perched on a hill, with its 1970’s vibe exterior and basketball hoop outside of it and all, we both fell madly in love with the house because of the very good bones…and an amazing ocean view! TE immediately put an offer in, we lost it to another buyer and then a few months later it became available again, TE immediately put in another offer, this time his offer was accepted and then after a long escrow we got it! Phew. Patience and persistence paid off. TE was unrelenting about buying the house even when I was getting nervous and was second guessing. I am so happy he didn’t second guess and that!
Anyhoooo….here we are now. Spending almost every weekend for the last 7 months doing house things, meeting with contractors, architects, visiting showrooms, looking at plumbing fixtures and fittings. We are having a great time…we are also learning a lot about each other and how to work together as a couple on a major project. We definitely have those moments of “his style” vs. “her style” but generally we are on the same page on the overall vision and how we want this home to feel; we want it to be a fresh modern place for us to call home and an inviting and welcoming place for all of our family and friends to enjoy too.
The house is totally in progress right now. From the outside, it looks like a haunted house because it is so torn apart…the kind of house that only a mother could love!
Anyhooo…some of the windows went in last week…windows for the master suite. At the same time, we found out the wood floors we had picked for the entire house had been discontinued, so we had to select new ones…and our contractor told us he needs all bathroom tiles picked out within the next two months. We got nervous and went to work.
Below are some tiles we are thinking about for a few of the bathrooms and then our options on wood floors.
Oh, did a mention the master bedroom has a magnificent ocean view too?
Will keep you posted on progress! Must run to work. Have a big meeting this morning!
Happy Monday!

I would love to wake up to that view every morning!
The is the most beautiful view ever!! Can’t wait to see move. These tiles are perfection. Thanks for sharing. Mary
Amazing view. How wonderful it will be to wake up to that. And I love your tile picks. Can’t go wrong with any of those.
Tiles are pretty and go with the ocean colors. I would definitely change the dark wood floors to light maple. I think dark wood floors have run their course and light floors go with the tones of the blue tiles. I decided on light maple floors and love them — would never go dark again.
What are the names of the wood floors? I love it all.
The lighter floor is Provenza Ustica…the darker is Provenza Cimino.
I love those samples too but make sure you purchase some floor boards before deciding. We know someone who bought Provenza for their large entry and it had large filled knots ALL over. It did not look good. Good Luck with all of your decisions- i know it will look amazing!
I live in LA (Santa Monica, specifically) and Malibu is such a cute, quaint and relaxing place to live. Sometimes I wish that I could just get away and enjoy some peace & quiet!!
The view from you master suite is to die for!! I love the basket weave tiles and can’t wait to see everything finished!!

We have chosen Provenza Cimino floors for our house and have had a hard time talking to anyone who has also used them. Can you tell me which color you went with? And how you are liking it so far? Your home is magnificent. Enjoy!
We have not been able to see them installed. Apparently there was a problem with color consistency when the floor was first introduced. We just saw a few of our boxes the other day, and they look great. They are darker than the original board we saw but exactly on point. We’ll be installing in a few months. I will share photos. When do you install?
