THIS OR THAT: STRIPE VS. SOLID RUG!

March 13, 2012
  • Share
Living room in an apartment with a white sofa with pink accent pillows, a metal coffee table on wheels and a solid grey rug

Here are two photos of small European apartments. Similar in tone (brightly lit, simply furnished) but different in floor covering choice.

The first living room features a solid grey rug (in some sort of jute or natural fiber)…the one below has full on stripes (ala a famous Madeline Weinrib rug but this is probably the Ikea version) on the floor.

So the question is solid or stripe in today’s THIS OR THAT!

Living room in an apartment with a grey sofa, wood floors and a black and white striped rug and a round metal coffee table

Which do you prefer?  In this case, I think I prefer the solid, but I do LOVE pattern on area rug…

Please do weigh in.  I love hearing your thoughts on design!

Happy Tuesday!

The solid rug looks sophisticated and pulled together.

I like both rugs….but the second room looks so droopy that its hard to compare…I think the stripped rug in the first room would look great….

I am into the graphic patterned rugs right now; however for this room I go with the solid.

I’m ALWAYS for stripes but for some reason today I’m loving the solid. Both, beautiful rooms however.

I’m with the one who said the striped rug in the first room would be better! This particular solid rug doesn’t fit in well with the room.

I like both, but prefer the whole look of the first room more, Love love love the look of a persian rug too, oh what the heck, any rug would look good as long as it’s styled correctly!

Solid. that stipe one is getting too trendy (I own it!). I really do prefer the first photo because I agree with another commenter that it looks pulled together and calming. I like what appears to be a gray sisal/jute type rug instead of the more usual brown toned ones.
I will forever love a white slipcovered sofa. Can’t go wrong.

I like the solid gray jute — it looks thicker and cozier!

I think the solid gives you more room to play around with redecorating in the future. If you ever want to mix it up with colors, pillows, throws, etc.

I would usually go for the stripes, but the whole look of the first room is more collected and sophisticated. The iron coffee table against the graphite sisal is pretty fantastic.

Definitely the stripes! These crisp white rooms make me want to trash mine and start over! They look so clean and bright! Maybe I should just clean mine!
