BEFORE (above): A traditional staircase with wood spindles and carpeted stairs looks outdated and blah.
AFTER (below): Staircase gets a modern update! Carpet is removed and replaced by dark hardwood flooring. Wood spindle railing is replaced with a wire and brushed metal railing for a sleek, clean and modern look. Notice that walls are now painted a bright white to compliment the more modern museum-like look!
TIP: In order to make anything more modern…try “cleaning up the lines”. Notice in the before picture there is more visual clutter. In the view of the old staircase, the curvy stair spindles, the two-toned staircase with white trim, base boards painted white to contrast the color of the wall and the muddy brown carpet all create a bit of visual disorder. In the after picture, the staircase is streamlined with near see-through wire railing, pin-straight metal spindles and the uniform bright white walls.
FYI, I found this staircase remodel on Flickr and use is granted via the Creative Commons license. Flickr can be a great resource for design and decor pictures!
Just found you, and love your blog…I’ll be reading more often!
