Black and White Bathroom – Contrast Study

February 7, 2017
  • Share

Random story…somewhat related to but kind of not related to this pretty black and white bathroom in this post…bottom line is due to my endless house hunt, I am on endless search for ideas for the perfect kitchen, bath, floors, lighting and more.

Okay…here goes the somewhat random story…bear with me…

So I was at a Super Bowl party the other day with SFJ.  My friend RB (or RBD) and her hubby JS had invited us to their lovely home.  I must admit SJF and I went to the party to be totally social and to hang out with friends…not for the game.  The set up RBD and JS had going was quite spectacular. Catered food, a bar, servers asking you what you needed at every moment, lots of people milling, comfy seating for game watching.  It was like glamping for Super Bowl.  They also had 3 televisions going.  One was outside (such a luxury to watch the game by their pool).  One was in her husband’s man cave, a chic designer version of a man cave.  The last was t.v. was in a very refined den.  SFJ and I were in the den sitting in the room with all of the people who were just watching the commercials when RB’s friend K made me feel so much better about my house hunt…

Someone in the room watching the Super Bowl commercials only asked me how my hunt was going.  I told them I had made offers on 6 houses and had not gotten one…yes…6 houses!! Arghhhh…. Then K, who I have known for years said, “Don’t worry, I made 14 offers on houses before I got mine.”  Metaphorically, the ceiling opened, the skies cleared, birds started chirping, rainbows appeared and rays of glorious sunlight lit the room…an epiphany…I wasn’t a crazy kooky house hunter who would never find a house after all.  Thanks to K, I finally felt normal about my picky and very laborious house hunt.   Thank you K!  And thank you to RBD for inviting us to her lovely lovely home…filled with so many design ideas.

Anyhoooo….now the loose tie in to this black and white bathroom…I am collecting all ideas for the perfect bath…and I will continue to so until I find my next spot!!

I like this black and white bathroom with strong contrasting lines.  The white subway tile with the black grout on the shower walls, the steel window frame shower glass door, the multifaceted pendant light and the lovely black and white cement tile floor.  I think I will do a cement tile floor definitely in my mythical new bath in my unfound new house.  Yes I will.

What do you think of the high contrast in this black and white bathroom?  Too bold or just right? Like or love?

Over the last couple of years, I have discovered I also love high contrast, so I say GO FOR IT! As long as you keep things simple and add some element of warmth, I think you will be pleased with b/w contrast.

Happy house hunting and may it be quicker than #14!

This bathroom is about as large as my apartment, but I L-O-V-E it! I too am collecting ideas for my Forever Home, where I can design/paint/sew and sell. Been looking at lots in the area but still coming up short. Have the house plans and most of the furniture I’ll need, it’ll be modest but functional. I also work for West Elm so finding new items won’t be a problem.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading and gleaning inspiration from your blog….

This Haussmannian apartment sits directly facing N This Haussmannian apartment sits directly facing Notre-Dame on the Left Bank, and @double_g_interior_design designed the interior to match that setting without competing with it. ✨
The approach was deliberate restraint: restored cornices kept intact, stained oak floors, limestone tones, a mix of vintage furniture and contemporary silhouettes. Every choice earning its place. The light does the rest. Bouncing off mirrors, moving through the neutral walls across the day. 🔅
→ Save this if you’re working with a Haussmannian space and want to let the architecture lead.

That level of control is what makes the result so specific. Rich materials, sculptural forms, cinematic lighting but nothing feels decorative for its own sake. Every detail was considered as part of one complete vision, and you feel it in every room. ✨

This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a French interior designer and architect, Nathan Litera @nathanlitera is a beautiful reminder that good design isn’t about replacing the past, but learning how to live with it. You see it in the preserved millwork, the original fireplaces, the parquet floors, and then in the quiet contrast of contemporary lighting, cleaner silhouettes, and restrained color.
The magic is in the balance. The newer pieces don’t compete with the architecture. They feel intentional, calm, and completely at ease. Nothing is overly styled. Nothing distracts. History stays front and center while the space still feels entirely livable today.
Here’s how to bring that same feeling into your own home:
* Keep your base timeless — neutral walls, classic materials, architectural details if you have them
* Let contrast do the work — modern lighting or furniture against traditional bones instantly updates a space
* Edit your palette — keep colors within a tight range and let texture and form do the talking
* Invest in materials — marble, wood, plaster. They age beautifully and never feel out of place
It’s not about recreating a château. It’s about understanding the feeling that quiet kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Save this for when you want your space to feel layered, timeless, and truly considered. ✨
