Decorating Ideas – Colorful Mixing and Matching

September 9, 2015

decorating ideas bright colorful living room

One of my greatest fears is living in a space with too much color. I know. Most people have more normal “greatest fears” like the fear of being trapped in a meeting with no water, or the fear of going to hotel with wall to wall carpeting and not so nice bed linens, or the fear of having to wear open toed sandals before being able to get a refresher pedicure…oh ooops…those are MY other greatest fears…hmmm…  Anyhooooo…you know what I mean. Most people do not have a “decorating with too much color” fear.

To illustrate my color bravery, today I bring you a cheerful space where color is used just right in my view. Some decorating ideas perhaps that involve color mixing and matching.  Chartreuse (that lime green) sofa, paired with orange and blue pillows and a brown and white rug all work.   Then there is the delicate use of color in the art in the kitchen that picks up the bright orange of the Eames chairs in the dining room.

These rooms are the opposite of my greatest fear…not too much color…just the right amount…what do you think?

I love color….I was an art major after all! But in my own home, I prefer a more serene setting with small doses of color. While green is my favorite color and the sofa is a yummy shade, it would be way too much of a commitment. I prefer to bring in color with art, pillows, and throws. I get bored way too quickly and like to be able to change things up on a whim! 🙂

Old-world plasterwork meets contemporary furniture, and warm brown-stained wood quietly anchors every room. A conversation between heritage and modernity that never raises its voice. By @atelierdaaa 🤍

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
