This is my pig…
Well it is not exactly my pig…my pig is in my office (and is pictured below)…this is AM’s pig (above). Oddly enough, though, about a year and a half ago, without each of us knowing, on different coasts and at the exact same time, we bought the same pig.
Here’s the story of my pig…

One day in fall of 2006, I went into my friend JS’s store – Persimmon – it is on Flores here in LA just off of Beverly Blvd. I walked into her beautiful bright shop where she sells gorgeous jewelry(by designers like Jamie Joseph) and other delightful objects (home accessories, purses, candle holders, vases, decorative boxes, art items etc.).
Anyway, it’s fall of 2006 and I walk into her store…I immediately notice several very surprising looking items on display… at least six or seven gold, silver and white pigs.
For some odd reason, I was immediately drawn to them. “What are these and how much are they?” I said eagerly.
“They are pigs by this Chicago artist named Harry Allen, let me look up the price.” JS replied.
While JS was looking up the price I was becoming more and more bemused by the little metallic pigs (the white was less interesting to me…the gold and silver were mesmerizing to me) and even more confused by how I would ever justify buying one. What would I do with it? Could this be used in my house? Could I use this “pig” to decorate? A pig? A metallic pig?
Silver pig – Persimmon – $195
JS sat patiently with me as I hemmed and hawed as to whether to make the purchase…finally she appealed to the absolute superficial snob in me…she mentioned that some NY transplanted socialite and just bought three pigs from Persimmon. There, enough said…that justified the purchase of a metallic pig in my mind!
A month later, I was on a plane to NYC and was reading the New York Times. In it there was an article about the Chinese New Year – it was there and then that I found that 2007 was the Chinese Year of the Pig. I knew I was right to get my pig! Even, more to my surprise, when I arrived at AM’s loft in NYC, I saw, unbeknownst to me, she too had purchased the same silver pig! Coincidence? Serendipity? Shared tastes? Luck of the draw? Or the pig asserting himself in the universe…this is my year!
The year of the pig has since passed…now it is the year of the Monkey…but I still have my pig. Brings me good luck on a daily basis! Pig power I guess…
Please send in your photos of home or house decor items that are a bit quirky but cool. I’ll post your story.
I am so glad you got the pig! I love them! I have a wooden one on my tv cabinet.. Pig Power!! 😉
I am in love with this photo.
