Outdoor Deck Decor – My Winter Garden Spruce Up

February 29, 2016

Outdoor deck decor Hollywood Hills garden living room
My garden and deck at my tiny little cottage in the Hollywood Hills yesterday.

It seems so unimaginative to talk about the weather.  Here in Southern California when it feels like summer in February, I am talking about the weather as it relates to my outdoor decor.

As most of you know, I live in a tiny little cottage in the Hollywood Hills.  Every year, I go through the ritual of letting the garden design and the deck go dreary for the winter months, those months when I am hardly ever outside enjoying the outdoor living room I have set up.  And every year, around May or June, I go through a very rushed, frantic makeover when I realize my outdoor area is in shambles.  It is usually a 5 day rush because some friend or another is coming to stay with me.  I call in all the forces – gardener, handy guy, upholsterer etc.  I typically spend goo gobs of money in 5 days on my outdoor space trying to make up for all of the neglect for most of the rest of year.

Wouldn’t it make sense for me to maintain a pretty outdoor space year round?

Wait…didn’t I say I was going to talk about the weather? Oy.

Anyhoooo….the perpetually sunny weather here in Los Angeles has prompted me to reconsider my “neglect-then-hurry-and-fix-up-for-guests” approach to my garden. The weather is so nice here, I cannot avoid my garden and deck. So this weekend, I went to the garden center and flower mart and started to get my garden going again. I swept off the patio furniture and put a nice navy blue buffalo plaid table cloth on the teak dining table, added some COCOCOZY table linens, some flowers here and there and voila…my late winter deck decor refresh. I also bought four Senetti plants for potting. These plants bloom with a cute white and purple flower that looks like a daisy. Love them. So cheerful.

Well here it is….

A buffalo plaid navy table cloth seemed appropriate for an outdoor dining room table. The oversized navy gingham check makes the table look “chic picnic”.

What do you think of my late winter/pre-spring outdoor deck decor spruce up?

Happy Monday!

What an inviting deck, Coco. Happy and cozy. That flower arrangement on the ottoman is so beautiful.

Love it! The flower arrangements and the Navy blue buffalo plaid in combination with the furniture and the colour of your deck – very stylish and sooo (coco)cozy:-)
Here in Germany it is still cold and rainy, but your pictures just pushed in a good mood. Can´t await the spring season to come!

Have a great weekend. Sunny greetings, Sven-Markus

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
