Dreamy 1850s Queen Anne Victorian Brownstone in Jersey City

May 11, 2023

One of my favorite series on the blog is the SEE THIS HOUSE series. I love to discover new homes, designs, and architecture all over the globe. I never know what unique spaces I might find while on a Pinterest or Instagram deep dive at 3 am. Today’s blog takes us into an 1850s Queen Anne Victorian brownstone in New Jersey. Specifically, this dreamy home is in Jersey City. The home transformation features elegant warm tones while maintaining its original charm. See more of this New Jersey brownstone below.

Who Owns The Apartment?

This beautiful brownstone is owned by interior designer, Arianna De Gasperis. She discovered a true real estate gem located in  Jersey City’s historical Van Vorst Park. This property is one of the first homes constructed in the entire park in 1852. Truly a special place to live. The brownstone is a 3,300 square-foot property with original details, making it the ideal canvas for De Gasperis to showcase her talent. She made sure to preserve as much as she could throughout the renovation.

The Modern Kitchen Renovation

The original kitchen was narrow and too small. The first room De Gasperis wanted to renovate was the kitchen. She removed a wall, demolished a back staircase, and relocated a powder room to make a luxury modern kitchen. She wanted a kitchen that was completely functional for her lifestyle. There wasn’t any room for entertaining. Prior to the remodeling, the only route into the backyard was through the garden. So she decided to build a deck off the kitchen which provides an elegant outdoor area. The kitchen was expanded to twice its original size. The beautiful bay windows were enlarged to flood the kitchen with natural light. Unfortunately, the original parquet floors could not be salvaged. Ariana chose herringbone oak floors to restore the character of the space.

De Gasperis is inspired by European interior design. She teamed up with London-based design firm, DeVol, to design the cabinetry and paint them an olive green color. The paint color is Benjamin Moore’s Devonshire Green.

The Original victorian Brownstone Details

While Ariana gutted the entire house, there are a few details that are original. The grand staircase shown above is the original staircase. There are also original trim and mouldings and fireplaces. She did a fabulous job maintaining the beauty of the historic home while integrating her own design style.

There were rooms and details that needed a lot of work such as the flooring and the bathrooms. Ariana completely transformed the bathrooms by increasing their size to make them more spacious and modern.

An Elegant Living Room Design

How elegant is this living room design? The furniture is warm tones and mixes of textures. The brown velvet accent chair looks luxurious in the space. I adore the hints of vintage pieces. The vintage chandelier adds the right amount of glamour to the room.

The Serene Primary Bedroom

The earthy bedroom is a neutral space with a unique green headboard. The Venetian plaster wall with trim moldings adds a charm that’s cohesive to the Victorian townhouse. The home decor is very minimalist with a vintage charm. She added a green velvet bench to match the headboard. I love how she adds sophisticated colors to the space.

History of Van Vorst Park

Today’s blog comes with a quick history lesson about the famous neighborhood in Jersey City. The Van Vorst Park neighborhood was established in 1841. It was named after the powerful Van Vorst family, who were among the first Dutch settlers west of the Hudson River.  It truly blossomed in the final half of the nineteenth century, pushed by population development throughout the New York area. the neighborhood consists of rows of uniform properties around the park.

Behind-the-scenes: Fun work trip to visit the COCOBehind-the-scenes: Fun work trip to visit the COCOCOZY bedding collection at the Welspun showroom in New York. Met with some buyers, had a fun time with the Welspun team, then capped off the weekend with a visit with friends. It is a long process to get bedding in stores across the country...showing the collections at textiles market is one of the first steps!
If you're interested in learning how I have gotten @cococozy products into stores around the country over the years including in major retailers...follow along...just one entrepreneur's journey. :)

Today is my birthday but...I don’t want to celeb Today is my birthday but...I don’t want to celebrate...I want to help.
I want to make a meaningful impact in our greater Los Angeles community suffering from the fires. I invite you to join me in transforming birthday wishes into support for one local organization on the ground in Pasadena/Altadena.
I have made a contribution today already to the LA Fire Relief Fund created by @victorybiblechurch in Pasadena. They are actively assisting families in need in both Pasadena and Altadena who have been affected by the devastating Eaton Fire.
Although I don't have a personal connection to Pastor DeCuir or the church, I was searching for an organization that is helping in the Altadena area. A well respected civil rights attorney I follow @leemerrittesq is on the ground helping the church members and community members with legal services in the wake of the fires. I hope by contributing to their efforts, we can extend a helping hand to those facing significant challenges during this difficult time
To donate, please visit their website at https://vbcpasadena.org/ (link in bio as well). Every contribution, no matter the size, brings hope and relief to those who need it most. Tell them you heard about them from me.
Your generosity to the Los Angeles community is the best birthday gift I could ask for.

Happy New Year! 🎉✨ As we step into this freshHappy New Year! 🎉✨ As we step into this fresh chapter, I’m reminded of the beauty of starting anew and I like recommitting to goals at the top of the year. Nothing set in stone but just an overall vision of what I'd like to do and who I would hope to help along the way.
This year, my mantra is: **dream big, act boldly, treasure the small joys, continue to lead with kindness and to have as much empathy as possible for others **. Just a few things...😂
I’m also deeply committed to helping people who follow along to achieve their dreams. I'll be curating captivating interior design inspiration with COCOCOZY that will hopefully give you ideas and dreams for your own space. I will also be empowering you to realize the value of your influence with Chirpyest by earning cash back for sharing and shopping. I hope to be open about the journey of the COCOCOZY product line. I want to share real time behind the scenes how the line is being built and how we are growing Chirpyest; both examples of the not so linear journey of building businesses from the ground up. I hope these stories spark you to push your own boundaries and shake out of your comfort zones.
Lastly, in 2025, I’m committed to surrounding myself with people who have a positive vibe about them while striving to be that same light for others. Luckily, I have a great start on this with an amazing family and fantastic group of friends - a fantastic support network.
My wish for you in 2025: May this year bring you clarity, courage, and the confidence to pursue all that makes you happy.
What’s one thing you’re committing to in 2025? Let’s inspire each other in the comments! 💬❤️
Let's get to this...am ready 2025!
