USING BOLD COLOR AT THE GREYSTONE ESTATE!

The Gentelman’s Atelier at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, CA (above)

Imagine taking a color wheel and choosing almost every color to decorate a room…imagine doing so successfully.

Last weekend, while touring Veranda magazine’s The Great House at Historic Greystone Estate, a showcase home featuring the work of several accomplished decorators, I wandered up to the second floor with friend AZ and nosed into this room…The Gentleman’s Atelier.

Who knows how the Gentleman’s Atelier was first furnished back in 1928 when the mansion was completed…but rest assured it wasn’t decorated like this. Then who knows…now a very colorful, very eclectic and very livable space…that somehow this interior designer managed to make appealing even to “colorphobes” like myself.

The wall color is a bright burnt orange (if that is possible to have a bright burnt color), the bed cover is solid brown with pillows that are red, orange, off white and bright blue, the rug is a patterned dark brown and cream (I think), and in the corner sits a colorful plaid wing chair which seems to have red, blue and some purple mixed in. You might say…where’s the green?… Well there is a plant added for that touch. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet…color wheel covered!

James Lumsden, Los Angeles interior designer and furniture manufacturer, is responsible for this space.

While I enjoyed the surprising use of several colors in this space, I also noticed the mix of decor styles that are woven together in one room…

Most of the furniture seems to hail from Mr. Lumsden’s Las Palmas furniture collection…with the “Venetian” wrought iron bed with posters that curve into a canopy as the main attraction (I love this bed). The other furnishings around the room are inspired by places all around the world including a Japanese Country Table, an Italian inspired console table, modern lighting and a traditional wingback armchair.

I think the reason I fancy this room a bit is because I am so surprised that I fancy it at all…make sense?

Patterns and texture also play a roll in this colorful room at the Greystone Estate…with plaids, stripes, a bold Nepalese wool and silk rug with a vine pattern called the Moses Rug from the Rug Company, and a fully tufted chaise lounge in the corner. (above and below)

Again, another fun room from the Greystone Mansion’s recent showcase house….more to come.

What do you think about this room? Is mixing color your thing? Why or why not? Please click on “comments” link right below and weigh in!

I so much adore the first image. I love colors especially those that make spaces look bright, airy, and relaxing.

Old-world plasterwork meets contemporary furniture, and warm brown-stained wood quietly anchors every room. A conversation between heritage and modernity that never raises its voice. By @atelierdaaa 🤍

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
