I like it here in this cute kitchen but I wonder whether the black appliances break up the lines in this small space. In this NYC apartment, there is a fabulous gourmet black stove, hood, dishwasher and wine refrigerator…all nestled in between white cabinets, white marble counters, and backsplash.
Do tell. Would like to know…if you think this is UGLY OR PRETTY?
I don’t think I’d choose to do it this way but they are spaced apart and add a visual interest that’s different, for sure. 🙂
Hmmm…I guess it could work sometimes but it’s not for me. I do love white cabinets though. Maybe a black floor? or island?
I love it!
I think its probably hard to see in this photo but Im sure those black areas give off a lot of shine which might make this look a lot better in person.
So yes, I do think it works although this isn’t the best photograph.
I would probably not have used the black ovenhood b/c its the only bit of black floating above eye level but its hardly a deal killer for me.
I love white kitchens, there are 2 things I would change about the one above. The appliance on the left (perhaps a trash compactor) is an odd size and the handle to the side, so either switch the handle to the top, like the other appliance, or make it look like another white cabinet. The second distraction to a beautiful kitchen is the hood, it really stands out, being the only black thing up there, definitely give it a cover up with white double trim and plywood painted white. that’s just my opinion, otherwise very pretty!
I like it but I do think it works because there is a much larger kitchen on the main floor. If this kitchen was in a small apartment I feel it would be problematic. Any idea what type of marble is used in this kitchen?
Pretty! but it think it works because of the back splash that has those grey lines.
Keep staring at this picture and am having trouble gauging how I feel. All I can be sure of is how relieved I am to see a white fridge. A black fridge would be a a big black hole and a choppy nightmare.
I think it is beautiful and while I have a white kitchen with stainless appliances which I love this is a great alternative because stainless is almost overdone now. I don’t like all white because it looks too sterile for my taste so I think this is a great alternative.
UGLY!!!! It just doesn’t make sense – it’s visually cluttered yet you have these big blocks of black – neither the white nor the black enhance the other. They don’t work together. Being relatively evenly set apart (the black blocks) doesn’t help, especially with everything so busy. What matters is that the owner likes it…then it’s all good 🙂
I think the black appliances give your eye places to look and help guide you to look for other interesting items in the kitchen.
It’s not what I would want in my kitchen, but I wouldn’t hate it in another persons kitchen either.
I like the contrast but think they should have done the diswasher with a white panel. The refrigerator and stove alone create a better percentage of accent color without chopping up the room. In the photo the floor seems to be the wrong color (should be gray and white) but it might just be the photo.
I actually love this look. The space has a bit of a commercial / industrial feel to it w/ the pendants, stove, and faucet. The black appliances dress it up a bit and add some drama; while also providing balance and adding weight. The more I look at the picture, the more I like the use of the black appliances.
I love it!! Did not think I would but I do!!
I love.
Stainless appliances would make this kitchen look generic–like everyone’s. The black gives it an edge and weighs down the rest of the room.
I like it. REGULAR people, like me, probably have this more than the other due to finances.
Thanks for asking!

Nope – don’t care for it. The black is too harsh.
For me, it does not work, but then I never like black appliances. It seems a little choppy to me.
Pretty! I think it works, it actually looks less sterile this way versus white on white.
I just LOVE a white kitchen. I would have added some stainless panels to the hood making it blend better with the range. Oh, and maybe a darker floor. Still, I could live with it.
I like it. It is similar to what I am doing right now with my southern california kitchen remodel except with stainless appliances. stainless always has black accents anyway. sophisticated and clean
I’m not a fan of the black appliances in this situation. I want to like this, but for me, it just falls short. I think I would’ve stuck with stainless steel appliances for a more unified look. (yes, I know I sound like HGTV – LOL !!! )
I like it! I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to go for the look myself, but I do like that it adds visual interest to the kitchen.
Ugly.
It’s not really working for me. Not sure why, but then again it might be cause I have white fridge, stainless stove, and black oven (which is very troublesome lately and that could be why I am not feeling this).
I like the concept of matching appliances, but my home was built in 1964 and everything is an odd size. Hence the mismatching is what would fit in the space. *sighs* Oh to have an oven that didn’t set off the smoke alarms…
Would people like it better if the counter tops were black?
We might have used black lower cabinets which perhaps would have tied the elements together. This is fine however the black of the appliances isn’t brought into a happy marriage with the other components. Too big a leap perhaps and would have worked better with black elsewhere as well.
A white kitchen with black appliances can make a beautiful statement – this fails to do so. It is not the issue of the black appliances ‘breaking up’ the fluidity of the design – it is that the design is flawed. The cabinet over the sink could have been the same size as the remaining cabinets and a different faucet shuld have been installed. The corner of the kitchen should have had a ‘corner cabinet’ which would have served to add interest to the design and make the space fluid. The backsplash does not work in this space and the floor should have been a black and white tile to complete the impact of the cabinets to appliances. The flooring in this kitchen doesn’t fit into this space in any manner.
Black and white kitchens – yes.
This black and white kitchen? No.
You should see MY kitchen! Stainless and Black, plus, I’m putting in white wainscoting and Graham & Brown’s black and white wallpaper. My backsplash is marble “bookweave” (gray, black, and white) I’m lovin’ this and it!!!!
For me, the tough part of this kitchen is the upper cabinets. I love glass fronts, but because of the bump out in the corner, an odd full door piece has to nestle its way into the corner. I wish they had scaled back on the glass door fronts so that this one door could have been more concealed amongst other full door front and not seem so out of place!
Oh darn, I just think it’s ugly. It looks like a mistake. Perhaps if the backsplash weren’t grey and white (which seems to beg for stainless steel appliances. I could see the black appliances working with a tile that had some black in it somewhere to tie it all in, but this just looks odd to me.
I also think the black is too harsh. I understand not wanting to do the same old stainless (even though that’s what I have in my white kitchen and I love it) but I think instead I would have done white panels on smaller appliances and then a great color (enamel, painted) for the stove and hood. If I wanted visual interest. And BTW, my grandmother had black appliances and ever speck of dust showed when the afternoon sunlight came in. It was awful.
I am in love with the marble back splash! Nothing goes better with white than black! Thanks so much for posting!
Love, Jamie Herzlinger
I. Love.it.I would put some black items in the cabinets that have glass doors to break up all the white at the top. If you had used stainless,it would look too sterile and all white would be too horrible.Just add a little color in the glass( like I suggested EX.Black plates, pitchers or some other colored items that would compliment the kitchen.I think it looks amazing…
It’s a no for me! Chops up that kitchen and doesn’t allow my eye to travel and rest very easily!

I would prefer stainless, and if they want the black and white look I would include the Viking Stove, with the all stainless hood and a classic basketweave or penny tile floor with black as the accent color. The counters look lovely with the stainless stovetop. Kitchen looks nice as is but I would prefer the stainless tonal look…. JBM
I love the white marble backsplash! The black and white with gray accents from the marble all flows so well. I usually prefer stainless steel but in this case, the black is a nice contrast!
It’s not nice to call a home that someone loves ugly…sometimes things are just a little, well, jarring. I don’t mind these black appliances, though! I think it’s really refreshing when people don’t follow trends (like stainless appliances). I would have gone with stainless minor appliances and then kept the range black to make it really pop!
It could work with a few black accessories.
I’d also prefer if the dishwasher was white and with glass cabinets had a mirrored back.
If this photo were more staged there would probably be darker items behind the glass but overall, it works.
I love it..all it needs is a splash of red. Maybe on the counters..red cannisters?
I’m so torn on this! At first glance, it was very appealing, especially with the backdrop. At second glance, I feel some dark stainless would look amazing in there, especially considering the color of the floor.
