How To Dress Down A Dressy Dress

March 14, 2018

Who says dressy clothes are just for dressy occasions?

I’ve been trying to find ways to incorporate the fancier items in my closet into my regular wardrobe — and I’ve found that with a little creativity and willingness to play around, you can find a look that works for almost any day of the week!

Case in point… I bought the Chloe dress pictured throughout this post for a wedding I was going to late last year. As I’m sure many of you can relate, it’s a beautiful dress (that I spent way too much money for), but it just sits in my closet.

A little background, I purchased the dress while rushing out of the store before closing… without even looking at the price tag. I still lose sleep over that sometimes, but what can you do. I had to catch a flight early the next morning for the wedding, so I ended up deciding to make it work. In hindsight, I totally could have worn something perfectly nice that I already owned (without spending an arm and a leg) and returned the dress, but here we are. All dressed up with nowhere to go!

Instead of leaving this little number in my closet just waiting to be worn, I dusted it off and attempted to dress it down for a meeting I had with some important folks in the entertainment business. I immediately called my friend A.Ro, who I always turn to for her expert fashion advice. She always gives me a hard time about my choices, so I wanted to make her proud!

She was doing the best she could with offering me advice for dressing down a dressy dress, but she was at work preparing for a big meeting (How dare she not be fully committed to my crisis, right? Ha.)… so I felt abandoned in my pursuit.

I flooded her with tons of photos and frantic messages (we’ve all been there, right?), and even though we was busy, she did manage to send a few ideas like: “flat boots…biker pointy,” heeled booties, or maybe a jean jacket with a scarf. Here’s one of my red scarves I originally didn’t think would work, but proved me wrong!

After it went dark on her end, I basically was running around my room like a chicken with no head trying to assemble something appropriate for this meeting. Needless to say, my room was a total disaster. You can see a small glimpse of the tornado behind me here!

Ultimately I asked myself, “What would A.Ro do?” and I threw on a white Tommy Hilfiger jean jacket, a red Chan Lu scarf, my grey suede Rag & Bone booties with a heel, and a cute purse to dress down my dressy dress. You can see the final look (below right).

Here I am wearing the dress at work with a velvet old Theory blazer.

One of the final products combining other staples from my closet!

While I encourage you to dig into your own wardrobe, you can find this Chloe dress by clicking here!

I hope this inspires you to reinvent your style with items you already own. Instead of taking a shopping trip next time you need something, why not wear a piece in a new way. There’s no one way to do something. Having an open mind and a little patience (in life and in fashion) will leave you with a little more money in your bank account and less clutter in your closet.

Add a scarf. Grab a denim jacket. Maybe a statement necklace and a pop of color… the possibilities are endless! Now go out there and have some fun with it!

I’m not a dressy dress person at all, but I like the way you combine it with a blazer. That is something I would wear

I remember building each outfit around a coat or a scarf, with comfortable shoes that could take me anywhere, knowing I would be out for hours just walking.
Nothing overthought, just pieces that felt right for the pace of the day.
What would be your OOTD for a cold day in Paris?

It started with an invitation. I met @hugobesnier_ It started with an invitation. I met @hugobesnier_ , founder and designer of luxury furniture brand @hartisparis_ at a small gathering in the 7ème, near the Musée d’Orsay. I was there with my new friends, Scarlette and Sarah.
The apartment itself was incredible! Tall ceilings, terrazzo floors, right along the Seine, but what really stood out was the furniture.
Turns out, it was Hugo's exquisite work.
The pieces are designed around everyday gestures: sitting, leaning, resting, but interpreted in a way that feels elevated and intentional. There’s a balance of structure and softness, where architectural lines meet more organic textures and forms.
He invited me back the next day to see everything more clearly, outside of the party setting, and it completely changed how I experienced it. The pieces feel intentional and refined, with a strong focus on material and form.
Sharing a closer look at his work here.
My Paris dream life keeps happening again and again!
