Sparrow’s Lodge Staycation

March 7, 2017
  • Share

Got a series of texts from friend VS the other day sharing a slew of pictures from some of her travels.  VS is known for hopping on a plane on a whim to international to places like Iceland, Scotland, Japan and any where a plane will take her.  She is one with a huge travel bug.  If a plane will take here there, she will go.  Having helped out at COCOCOZY for a bit, she knows I love great photos from her travels and all of her amazing adventures.

Two weeks ago, I got a marvelous text from her about her most recent travels – this time, she did not get on a plane.  This trip was a Sparrow’s Lodge staycation just outside of Los Angeles in Palm Springs.  She had a friend visiting from out of town, so they packed up her car and headed east to the desert.  Her description of the weekend stay…”camping rustic vibe! And it is very cozy – the people there were so nice.”  She described it as “a cool summer camp”.  All I know is that after seeing her photos of the hipster desert California casual decor and setting…I want to try out this little spot too.

Here is the description from the Sparrow’s Lodge website:

“Originally built as Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle and his wife Zetta, it was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood elite. Legend has it that iconic actress Elizabeth Montgomery had her first marriage at the Red Barn. The property also has had incarnations as Catalina Palms, El Rancho Lodge and now Sparrows Lodge. The Lodge was fully restored in 2013 and many of the original buildings are still in use with modern updates retaining the charm of the original Red Barn.

Sparrows Lodge is a completely restored 1950s retreat. You will be welcomed roadside with a simple hand-painted sign with two Sparrows. The Lodge has a modern rustic vibe that carries through to our rooms, communal barn, outdoor fire pit and vegetable garden, accented by a collection of fine art including works by Ruscha, Kelly, Katz & Baldesari. The 20 rooms feature exposed beam ceilings, russet red walls, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles and butterfly chairs. Swiss army blankets top plush mattresses, and instead of closets you’ll find a metal footlocker along with hooks and hangers. Our bathrooms feature rain showers, and many include horse troughs as bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. All rooms have AC/Heat and ceiling fans. With no televisions or phones in the rooms, there is an environment of ease and simplicity.”

P.S. If any of you travel to interesting spots here in the U.S. or abroad.  Please send me your photos!  I would love to take a look and possibly share them here on the blog!

More from the COCOCOZY Design House! An upstairs bathroom. Was so excited last week to see this bath featured on House Beautiful’s site. White subway tile contrasted with black slate mosaic tile on the floor. The light fixture was initially specified for the foyer of the home but I liked the way it looked in here. I added some decorative molding around the wall mirror and tah dah...high constrast small bath! Thanks to design house partners @totousa deep soaking tub and plumbing fixtures. @caesarstone counters. @lampslus light fixture. @benjaminmoore white walls. 📷: @reidrolls

Things are bright and cheerful inside the COCOCOZY Design House thanks to all the @benjaminmoore Super White OC-152 painted walls. Here’s a glimpse of the dining room before and after the paint. Oh what a difference some paint makes! Swipe left to see the before. BTW don’t you love the decorative grill on the HVAC return. I had to have this made to make an air/heating exhaust look good! 💃🏾Tap profile link for full break down on my paint colors in the house.

Here is the COCOCOZY Design House kitchen as featured on House Beautiful’s website. To see more of the house check out my IG feed or tap profile link for blog post about the @housebeautiful reveal. Love this view of the kitchen. We built this massive arch between the dining and kitchen where there used to be a tiny door only! The kitchen is super functional and pretty. Did the two toned cabinetry thing and the farmhouse sink from @kohler. So funny 5 of the 9 COCOCOZY Design House partners products happen to be in this small vignette! [email protected] - counters. [email protected] - kitchen sink/faucet. [email protected] - lighting
[email protected] - dishwasher
[email protected] - paint (Silent Night lower cabinets, Super White upper)
Everything including the kitchen sink makes this my dream kitchen!

Back balcony is looking good thanks to partner @cementtileshop! For today’s COCOCOZY Design House update, it is all about the back balcony of my 1930 Spanish Colonial Revival in the View Park area of Los Angeles. Swipe left to see the before! You should see the balcony now with a little seating and some plants added in. It looks good. I picked this quatrefoil tile pattern because it compliments the home’s architectural style and colors. I also thought tiling the balcony floor would make a fun trend moment in the house. One more thing, for the balcony wall, I had my COCOCOZY “Gate” textile pattern made into cement wall grates! So happy with the way this little bit of personalization makes this outdoor space work. Tap link on profile to see the balcony from every angle! Soon I will also reveal how it looks now that it is styled!
