11 Perfect Architectural Arches

October 9, 2015

arches cover an outdoor dining room

I love a wonderful arch in a home.

My best of friend AM says she doesn’t like arches in general. She likes square edges and likes to arrange her furniture in a grid pattern…she thinks arches look out of place with modern furniture and create an imbalance in a room. I agree with EVERYTHING best of friend AM says typically…but not this time! A beautiful arch design leaves an impression.

I think strategically placed architectural arches soften a room and make it feel personal. Also, think that arches successfully soften the hard times and cold edges in modern decor.  I love arched doors, windows and ceilings in living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, foyers, and even in outdoor structures.

AM knows I love her…and I told her I would reveal to the world that she hates arches…she was fine with it…she hopes she doesn’t get unkind notes from readers who agree with me. Please readers…if you agree with me on the wonder of arches, be kind to best of friend AM…! Here are some wonderful arches in homes around the world!

What Is A Roman Arch?

One of the most recognizable features of Roman architecture is the arch. Through the use of a keystone, it is a semi-circular arch used in structures, doorways, and hallways. The architectural arches grab interest by adding a surprising curvature to an otherwise geometric framework and may soften any space.

Interior Double Arch

The only thing better than one archway is two! A beautiful design to break up space and create more fluidity.

Arched Stone Trim Around the Front Door

While traveling in Europe, you’ll see many arched doorways that are surrounded by stone and keystone. It’s a beautiful design that isn’t used in modern architecture.

Rounded Arch around Window

Arched windows can be layered with trim detailing. The Roman arch gives a unique appearance to the window. Its subtle detailing-like trim can elevate any window frame.

If you cannot add an arch to the architecture of your home…here are some curved home furnishings and accessories that might do the trick!

The History of The Roman Arch

Despite people thinking Romans originated the arch. It was actually the Etruscans. They provided the Romans with many of their architectural innovations, including the use of hydraulics and arches. Roman architecture mostly refers to the structures found in Rome and the larger Empire, which lasted from about 509 BC until the fourth century AD.

Hmmm. I’m thinking I’m with AM on this. Not sure if she meant arches don’t really go with modern architecture or just not with modern furniture. But I’m hard pressed to remember arches used much in modern architecture. Perhaps just didn’t take notice. But I did notice that all your pictures, Coco, are of older houses with nary a modern one in sight. Hmmm.

It is warmer here now, but these were the looks I It is warmer here now, but these were the looks I reached for in Paris when the days were still cold. ❄️
I remember building each outfit around a coat or a scarf, with comfortable shoes that could take me anywhere, knowing I would be out for hours just walking.
Nothing overthought, just pieces that felt right for the pace of the day.
What would be your OOTD for a cold day in Paris?
If you want to shop these looks, comment SHOP and I will send you the link.

It started with an invitation. I met @hugobesnier_ It started with an invitation. I met @hugobesnier_ , founder and designer of luxury furniture brand @hartisparis_ at a small gathering in the 7ème, near the Musée d’Orsay. I was there with my new friends, Scarlette and Sarah.
The apartment itself was incredible! Tall ceilings, terrazzo floors, right along the Seine, but what really stood out was the furniture.
Turns out, it was Hugo's exquisite work.
The pieces are designed around everyday gestures: sitting, leaning, resting, but interpreted in a way that feels elevated and intentional. There’s a balance of structure and softness, where architectural lines meet more organic textures and forms.
He invited me back the next day to see everything more clearly, outside of the party setting, and it completely changed how I experienced it. The pieces feel intentional and refined, with a strong focus on material and form.
Sharing a closer look at his work here.
My Paris dream life keeps happening again and again!
