BLUE AND GREY ALL THE WAY IN A SMALL VICTORIAN COTTAGE!

September 13, 2010

Bright blue sofa and a stainglass window in a Victorian cottage
A bright blue sofa and a lovely stain glass widow add pops of color to a Victorian cottage’s main living area (above)

This is the home of Erin McLaughlin, editor of Style at Home. An adorable Victorian small cottage in shades of pale grey and a bit of blue here and there. Love it. Very soothing, simple and stylish.

I like light grey…to me it allows one to add a dash of color in a small space without closing in the dimensions of the interior.

Excellent little house I think!

Lovely greyish blue horse paintings grace the home’s small foyer. (above)

Floating shelves and a wall full of art in a small dining room in a cottage

A space saving banquet style love seat, Bertoia chairs, a mid-century modern looking dining table, a simple glass pendant light, and a Madeline Weinrib rug all come together to make a great small dining area. (above)

Bright gallery kitchen with stone tile floor
A transom in the t.v. room sheds bright light into the home’s galley kitchen (above)

Simple grey bedroom
Simple and serene bedroom is painted in a grey from Farrow and Ball. (above)

What do you think of this small home? I like it because I think this is a chic look that is easy to achieve (hmmm….might have to do a DESIGNER ROOM RECREATE on one of these rooms…hmmm….).

Hope you have a great Monday! Whoa is me…I have to go to a work party tonight…whoa is me…good food, interesting people watching, a little champagne perhaps…whoa is me…life is rough these days… :-)!

Have got to run to get dressed for work!

xo

I really like the muted gray and blue – you can really dial it up a punch of color or keep it fresh and simple as they have done.

Oh and love the stained glass window – so beautiful!

Hi Coco. Love this house. Do you know exactly which Farrow & Ball grey she used? I was looking at their paint chips for my home, and would love to know what was used here. Thanks!

I didn’t realize a color combination like this would come out this great! And it gives me more freedom to choose my own color for the decors and furnishings.

Wow, that place looks absolutely amazing! Someone’s got a really good style. The kitchen is my favorite, I think (it is too difficult to decide). Oh, and I never really realized how good the combination of blue and grey is. Nice.

This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a French interior designer and architect, Nathan Litera @nathanlitera is a beautiful reminder that good design isn’t about replacing the past, but learning how to live with it. You see it in the preserved millwork, the original fireplaces, the parquet floors, and then in the quiet contrast of contemporary lighting, cleaner silhouettes, and restrained color.
The magic is in the balance. The newer pieces don’t compete with the architecture. They feel intentional, calm, and completely at ease. Nothing is overly styled. Nothing distracts. History stays front and center while the space still feels entirely livable today.
Here’s how to bring that same feeling into your own home:
* Keep your base timeless — neutral walls, classic materials, architectural details if you have them
* Let contrast do the work — modern lighting or furniture against traditional bones instantly updates a space
* Edit your palette — keep colors within a tight range and let texture and form do the talking
* Invest in materials — marble, wood, plaster. They age beautifully and never feel out of place
It’s not about recreating a château. It’s about understanding the feeling that quiet kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Save this for when you want your space to feel layered, timeless, and truly considered. ✨

Sharing with you a day in my life here in Paris. ESharing with you a day in my life here in Paris. Every day for the last few months has been the greatest day ever here. Even days that are not event filled feel special in Paris.
Started with French class on this day. I was taking classes at L'Alliance Français because living here means actually trying to belong here and speak the language.
Then off to the Hôtel de Crillon @rosewoodhoteldecrillon ,a historic palace hotel overlooking Place de la Concorde, known for its timeless interiors and quiet kind of luxury, catching up with a friend like it was the most ordinary thing...in extraordinary place.
So even though nothing momentous happened...wanted to show you what my every greatest day life looks like in Paris.
This city keeps surprising me. 🖤

A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not overpowering, just enough to warm everything up, walls, upholstery, even the smallest details.
It shifts the mood completely. Calmer, softer, and a little more lived in.
Save this if you’re leaning toward softer, warmer spaces. 🌸

What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so hard to look away from is the deliberate clash Sophie Dries @sophiedries_ created and didn’t try to resolve.
The bones of the apartment are pure Haussmann: ornate cornicing, carved boiserie, a marble fireplace with a gilded mirror. Everything a 19th-century Parisian apartment should be. Then she placed a near-black dining table with brass-legged stools into the middle of it. A raw concrete-look bathroom behind the grandeur. Dark, sculptural objects on surfaces that were built for delicate things.
It works because she didn’t try to blend the two, she let them sit in contrast. The apartment feels lived-in and specific because of it.
→ Save this if you’re mixing old architecture with contemporary furniture.

Are you into paper lanterns, or do you prefer a more structured statement light? 🧐
