BYE BYE WHITE – HELLO DARK KITCHEN CABINETS!

July 22, 2011
  • Share
Kitchen with dark blue cabinets, white backsplash, black and white barstools at a dark blue island, stainless appliances and three silver pendant lights

If you read this blog, you know me…I love a bright white kitchen.  Love.  Lust.  Have.  Want another.  Would do every kitchen in all white…or white with a pop of color somewhere.  White white white kitchens…hoorah.  Ready okay.  White kitchens all the way! (Excuse me…losing my mind today perhaps…)

Okay…so I wax on about the bright white kitchen only to demonstrate how I am constantly contradicting myself .

Today…I’m loving dark dark kitchen cabinets…black, grey (my assistant KS just pointed out that I spell grey several different ways in the product descriptions for COCOCOZY…she put her foot down and said from now on we are spelling grey…gray…), or dark dark grayish brown.

And here I am…exercising a woman’s prerogative.  Although, I haven’t entirely changed my mind…I do still prefer a white kitchen, but I see the appeal of these kitchens with dark cabinetry.  So warm, inviting, bold in a way…I like.

Here are 7 kitchens with cabinetry in the color spectrum from gray to black.

Kitchen with stained wood floor, grey cabinets, marble backsplash from counter to ceiling, stainless appliances, a farmhouse sink and floating shelves

Kitchen with black cabinets, marble countertops, wood floor, stainless appliances, and a small pendant light

Kitchen with black lower cabinets and black upper cabinets with glass doors, white backsplash with matching counter tops and an island with a marble counter top and farmhouse sink

Eat in kitchen with black cabinets with stainless doors, white walls and tiled floor, a stone table with marble tabletop is surrounded by red leather upholstered chairs with wire legs.

Kitchen with black cabinets with no visible drawer pulls, stainless appliances, a dark marble countertop and wall mounted pot rack

Kitchen with dark grey cabinets with long silver drawer pulls, white tile floors and white upper cabinets with no visible drawer pulls

If you prefer white kitchens, could any of these darker kitchens change your mind?  If you like this look, which is your favorite.

Tomorrow I’ll probably find some white kitchen I like and post it.   So be prepared for a flip flop.

Happy Friday again!

xo

P.S.  Haven’t showered yet…oy vey…it is 8am…have to drop off car to be fixed, get to work, drop off sample bedding to sewing workroom (may have KS do this one), go back to work, go to a taping of a new show my friends are producing….lah dah dah dah.  Here goes….let the day begin!

These are all so wonderful… I must say I’m loving the 5th image, the kitchen with steel and rod iron elements with black. Loving the table top and burgundy chairs..

Very nice pictures!! I specially like the one with the glass doors and such nice porcelain inside. Of course you´d have to be very tidy to have that kitchen.
I have a black kitchen myself, and I love it.

3rd photo down. I too collect white ceramics and LOVE the way the black cabinets make it pop. That entire display would look incredible in a mostly white kitchen just the way a black island does.

I often find myself at the same crossroad! I love these but I’m still favoring white though. Maybe a client will want to do a dark kitchen so I can get a fix 🙂

I love the 3rd kitchen!! I’m a major neat freak so I love how you can see everything so beautifully organized through the glass cabinets. I also like the crispness of the contrast white against dark.

Its so funny, but remember how much we HATED those 70’s dark brown, depressing cabinets and white was so classic and fresh!

Well, here we say shades of gray, gray/blue and black (can’t get any darker than that!) looking chic and sophisticated. My favorites are first three. Especially that gray kitchen with the high ceiling. Really cool!

Enjoying the vibe of photo 2, kind of European, not contrived, comfy. Wondering though what they do for storage. Any additional pics of this kitchen? Thanks and Happy Friday back!

LOVE those black cabinets I have a mix of black and pale maple… Think the black adds a SNAP….which is not quite a POP…

Love black cabinets! For me, there is nothing better than black cabinets with a ton of beautiful white and marble tile! Last year, I renovated the kitch of my 120 yr old farm house (with a badly redone-in-the-80’s-kitchen). Here is the photo: http://wp.me/p1mWlp-aD

Our kitchen has the best of both worlds… white cabinets on the walls and black cabinets on the island! 🙂 Still, the southern girl in me will always love a white kitchen with white marble countertops.. dreamy!

I like the first one, but they’re all great. I have the best of both worlds too — my new kitchen has white ceiling and walls, white cabinetry on one side and charcoal (Iron Mountain) on the other! So very pleased with the result.

I do love a white kitchen, but, I could be persuaded with that sublimely gorgeous gray and white photo – the first one – wow – that could definitely get me thinking…!!

Love dark cabinets! My favorite right now is the kitchen in designer Lindsay Reid’s house that was featured in the June issue of House Beautiful. So gorgeous!

On a side note: The third pic down is another favorite kitchen design that was in Domino a few years back. The cabinets are actually a smoky blue color with light gray cement counters. The layout, cabinet style, and simplicity of that kitchen still appeal to me. 🙂

Too skinny and too bare. Thanks for sharing, I love a white kitchen but If I had enough daylight in my kitchen I may have crossed over to the dark side! Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more kitchens!

Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles an Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles and fancy things to make your house a home. In this picture, a plant, two chairs I found at the flea market, a layered rug situation and some modern art...de-cluttered space can be equally as inviting as one filled with memories and treasures. If you are stuck with how to decorate, I say keep it simple. Purge and start with the basics. Full disclosure, this is a shot of my living room from a few years ago when I first moved in...I didn’t even have drapes up when this was taken. I have since added pieces and changed out furniture and added a 2nd sofa...but it started super simple and it was lovely back then. When the world is swirling around us and making no sense, how are you keeping things simple at home? #socococozy #bringstylehome #cococozy
Pre-pandemic throw back photo to where I was last Pre-pandemic throw back photo to where I was last year. Clueless as to what was to come. Was in Paris, with my mom, enjoying her summer apartment in the middle of the 6th arrondissement. I had just left the U.K. visiting friends for a few days in London and the Cotswolds. None of us knew that this summer 2020 would be so different. Today, I can only hope this time of tumult and great divides leads somehow to a future of calm and harmony. Going backwards in time is not an option. Pushing forward is. Happy Sunday to you. Where were you last summer? Where do you imagine you’ll be next? Xoxo #socococozy #bringstylehome

Life lesson from a room transformation: When faced with the daunting and not so pretty, look to do the work, and you can make changes to bring out what is good. Right? Am in my living room right now looking at these pretty flowers in that white urn I found lying around. The urn works (see Flower Power highlights for backstory). Thinking on who I might send one of these bouquets to today as a little act of kindness. Still working on the patience piece of her advice! 🤪 Who might you send flowers to? How can you be more patient with yourself? Happy Saturday!
