ADD MORE TO THE FLOOR WITH A STRIPED WOOL RUG!

A four poster bed in a Timothy Whealon designed room sits atop a brown and off white striped rug with an interesting drop step pattern. (above)

Uber chic San Francisco friend JO asked me the other day what I thought was “in” in home decor. Huh…it was like a pop quiz. In a moment though, without thought I said “interesting graphic patterns on floors and texture on ceilings”. There. I said it. The “in” thing in my view is adding great interest to your floors and/or texture, color or even pattern to your ceiling. You can leave a room pretty much bare but let the floor do the talking.

Was at a party a few weeks back and I saw a fantastic striped rug at a friend’s house…in a bedroom. I LOVE this rug. The guest room was simple…all white, a great antique twin bed, a lucite chair somewhere or another, a little desk and this great drop step pattern striped rug. This friend is quite posh so I know she chose the more expensive version of this rug…

But in today’s CHEAP TO CHIC, I give you options for a fabulous flat weave wool striped rug at two price points…hard to tell the difference I think…except in price!

What do you think of this striped rug? Just know…j’adore…but it is okay if you think otherwise.

Happy Wednesday!

I love a striped rug. I especially like the brown and white stripe, not as severe as the black and white and more unique.

Side note- I have really been enjoying your blog since my carpenter husband and I moved into our first house.

While I love striped rugs as much as you do the symmetrical part of me needs the stripes to line up.

A striped rug was the big eye catcher in the movie Something’s Gotta Give (2003)…, and I think it never went away, still popular, and I love it!

Hi! I just discovered your blog and I love it!

I have been obsessed by striped rugs lately and am thrilled to read your post on this subject. I saw an episode of HGTV’s “Dear Genevieve” and she used a grey & white striped rug for a client.

Not sure if that rug she (Genevieve) used is pricey but does anyone know of or seen a grey & white striped area rug and/or know where I can get one? I love the IKEA black and white one but I’m afraid it may be too stark in my not-too-much-light filled living small apartment.

Thanks for having such a terrific blog!

Nour Arida’s (@nouraridaofficial) Paris apartment Nour Arida’s (@nouraridaofficial) Paris apartment was designed to feel like a little piece of Beirut — a pied-à-terre that keeps her connected to Lebanon while living in France.
Architect Carl Gerges @carlgergesarchitects built the whole interior around warmth and softness: a caramel sofa, a pink kitchen, milky whites throughout. Nothing sharp, nothing cold. The palette reads as indulgent without trying. It’s the kind of space that feels like it was chosen for comfort first and aesthetics second, even though both are clearly considered.
What’s easy to miss is the restraint underneath it all. The softness works because it’s disciplined. Every piece earns its place in the same tonal story.

Why do Paris apartments feel so much better than e Why do Paris apartments feel so much better than everything else?
While living in this cute 3 bed 2 bath apartment in the 6ème, I realized it comes down to a few things done really well:
• High ceilings
They create space without adding anything
• Herringbone wood floors
Classic, subtle, and never go out of style
• Crown molding + ceiling medallions
The detail that quietly elevates the entire room
• Interior French doors
They give you openness and separation at the same time
• Natural light
The one thing you can’t fake
I’m staying in this adorable pied-a-terre for a two months. It is my sister and brother in law’s place; they invited me to cozy up here on my own while they are back home in LA.
Every room keeps proving the same point. It’s not about adding more. It’s about getting the foundation right.
If you could only bring one of these Paris apartment design elements into your home, which one would it be?

I remember building each outfit around a coat or a scarf, with comfortable shoes that could take me anywhere, knowing I would be out for hours just walking.
Nothing overthought, just pieces that felt right for the pace of the day.
What would be your OOTD for a cold day in Paris?
