Love this electric shade of green called chartreuse…
Is there a way to make a bold statement with this bright green in home decor…a design statement that is brash, timeless and also possibly easy to live with? Is chartreuse too bright to use in a big way?
Well first before answering those huge important questions of the day (of course I hope you understand that I understand that in the greater scheme of things, these questions are not at all huge and if I took a step outside of my design focused world, I might even say these questions are not really even questions…LOL), I went to Wikipedia for this post to find a definition of chartreuse…here’s what the online info site had to say:
“Chartreuse is a color halfway between yellow and green that was named because of its resemblance to the green color of one of the French liqueurs called green chartreuse, introduced in 1764.”
I think this living room with a chartreuse painted fireplace and the chartreuse trimmed windows shows how a little chartreuse can go a long way to make a design impact! I like!
Would you ever be bold enough to paint a feature wall chartreuse in your own home? What do you think of this shade of green…like or not your cup of tea? What do you think of this living room…design hit or miss? Do tell.
Happy Wednesday!

P.S. Exciting phone call yesterday with a company in North Carolina…talking about partnering on a big design project…we’ll see…may be months and months in the making but am keeping fingers crossed!
P.P.S. It is the end of the day and I just was looking at these photos again and realized that the wall behind the bookshelves is also chartreuse. Interesting indeed!

It works in this room and I would use it sparingly. I would like to see the books in those wonderful cases look more orderly and have some yellow book jackets or vases, etc in the cases.
Nice.
I love bold colors and think this green is great with the natural woods in the room. For me, it brings the spring/summer outdoors in. However, as for the choices of furniture I think it is a miss. They seem more like an after thought. I like the lines of the couch but it could be taken up a notch, maybe with an amazing arm chair and different coffee table.
Love this color. I’ve been contemplating a new color for my living room walls and this may be it!
I wonder what this room would look like with a different sofa choice. Perhaps a well-worn soft blue velvet? Or an orange print? I also wonder about an empty frame above the fireplace in a finish similar to the shelving. What do YOU think?
I’ve always loved this shade of green and love it with the muted soft tones of the wood and books in the shelves. I too do not like the furniture choices nor the colors on the sofa. This room would be great with a neutral cushy slipcovered couch, a large fabulous print on a couple of chairs in cream, taupe, maybe orange and touches of the chartreuse, and then a smaller print or two for pillows and an throw in bright paisley. More inviting to tuck in and enjoy the beautiful room! Love the tall wrought iron lamp but would need a few lower lamps for ambiance in the evening with the firelight. Okay, and a large whitewashed rococo mirror over the fireplace to reflect the rest of this fabulous space!
Chartreuse is such a great color. I like it in an entirely neutral room in shades of beige and whitewashed wood. It brings in just enough color, but doesn’t look too garish.
love…..smiles
While I admire the decorator for choosing the bold green, I think that this room is a miss for me. The space has so much potential to be charming, and sophisticated, especially with those amazing bookshelves, but the green, unfortunately, really throws me off.
Coco,
I love the color so much that I named my design firm “chartreuse,” http://www.chartreuseinc.com!
We kept our studio space pretty white & open with a pop or two of the sweet green color. I simply adore it, in all areas of home, fashion, food and beauty. If it is “lime-green-brown-gray-ish” it’s the best!
Thank you for spotlighting out color, it makes everyone smile! (have you tried the spirits? mix it with bubbles to cut the strength)
I’ve been crushing on these bright, Bohemian jewel box colors for awhile now: chartreuse, turquoise, fuschia, and of course a bit of purple (more grape than fig). There are some wildly gorgeous fabrics from Lee Jofa and Schumacher that incorporate these colors and I’ve been carrying the memo samples around with me like I’m Linus with a splashy, colorful security blanket!
I wouldn’t go so far as to do a chartreuse wall — that looks great in a photo, but I don’t think it would be livable. I like it for trim paint, and for things like area rugs, throw pillows, accessories, etc.
I really want to like this room but I think it’s a miss for me! Such great bones and really good potential but the furniture just doesn’t seem to work – I would have gone for a more lux sofa (I’m thinking navy blue velvet with white piping & accessories that tie in the chartreuse) and got rid of the little tiny table for something more grounding. It is a lovely colour, however!
Chartreuse Green is very difficult color when it comes to painting, but I must say this example is great.Probably the light from the huge windows do make this rare green a bit soofter. Thanks for sharing!
