I like this idea…using a classic black penny round porcelain mosaic tile on a foyer floor. The contrast with the white walls and red door really work in this entry way. I assume an unglazed porcelain would work best on the floor…no slipping and sliding! Like, like, like.

What do you think of this design idea? If you were tiling a foyer floor, what tiles would you use?
Happy Tuesday!

LOVE IT – you always see white penny tile – but the black is best! Especially if you used a gray-tinted grout to conceal dirty floors from being at the front door- amazing!
I really like it! It is very understated chic in unglazed black!
Absolutely love! A refreshing change.
Stunning. Love it! Can’t go wrong with Black flooring 🙂
So obsessed with this idea. Understated chic & totally functional!
Hmmm…No I’m not to fond of this -for some reason it just reminds me of the studs they use under football shoes….
super cute idea, great way to add pattern to a small space.
I think this looks amazing and would have jumped on this a year ago. Then we bought our house with a black tiled foyer. I’m sure the penny tile would be so much prettier than mine, but the black really shows the pet hair in our house. It’s not bad for regular dirt though. So, definitely a win as long as you don’t have medium to light colored pets.
I wish I could see your whole post in google reader…it’s stinky to have to click over to your site every time…and I always want to see more!
These are GORGEOUS! Retro, yet modern and chic all at the same time. Tile wouldn’t look right in the foyer of my style home, but I’d love to use something like this in my laundry room. I’m about to drop something heavy in there, you know “on accident,” because once the ugly builder grade tile is broken we’ll be forced to replace it with something WAY more interesting…
I really love mosaic tile for small spaces, especially Ann Sacks. But these penny tiles may be more affordable (easier sell to my darling husband, who will be pissed off about the “accident”) and I could probably scatter some red tiles here and there for my pop of color.
That looks quite nice. I just saw a similar treatment in the last issue of House & Home. I personally love really huge tiles. Emser has a line called Tex-Tile which looks like linen and comes four neutral tones, two warm, two cool, in light and dark shades. I’d install those in the 12×24 inch size in a herringbone pattern. That’d be cool!
I am loving the red door!
I love the round tiles! Black is really elegant. It’s cool!
I’m not really a fan of polkadots but they seem to go well in the foyer because they look relatively small on the floor. I think rugged bricks would also look good here 🙂
So inspired and lovely!! I do prints, canvas, greeting cards and posters about fashion, you´r invited to see my work 🙂
By the way love your blog and follow you!! 🙂
I like it in black, can also see it in marble… would be great in a powder room too.
What a fun idea! I love this hallway, so classic yet the round tile gives it just enough punch to give it a totally modern look. And the door? LOVE!

If memory serves me correctly, this foyer belongs to a Canadian designer and magazine editor and was published in Canadian House and Home. Loved it then, love it now.
interesting. I would never could come up with that. I always find my self inclining towards wood floors
I don’t love it. I like penny tile, but I often see it installed badly. (It really shows the join lines if not done well.)Plus, in high-traffic areas, tiles seem to get dug out by high heels. Love the red door, however.
I have found that using cheep black swimming pool mosaic size tiles works well for this kind of effect,They are non-slip cheep and clean easily.
