Elegant London Kitchen With No Upper Cabinets – Design Ideas

March 6, 2023
  • Share

The latest trend in kitchen design is to forego upper cabinets. While scrolling on Pinterest, I’ve seen so many different kitchen designs that do not include upper cabinets. It got me thinking…do we actually need them? While upper cabinets can be sleek and white, they take up valuable real estate in the kitchen.  This might not be a trend for design traditionalists to jump on. My first thought was “where do they keep their plates and glasses?” Interior designers are embracing this trend and creating kitchens that are just as open and inviting at eye level as the rest of the home. Of course, removing upper cabinets means paring down kitchenware, but minimalist approaches like those of London designer, Kerri Lipsitz, can be super helpful! Learn about the benefits of having a kitchen with no upper cabinets.

The Benefits of Having No Upper Cabinets

Interior designers and architects are focusing on minimalism in their kitchen designs. That’s why removing upper cabinets is trending. I know what you’re thinking…what about storage?! Designers are finding new and creative ways to elevate kitchens while maintaining functionality. The famous phrase “less is more” is now impacting kitchen designs. Learn some of the benefits below.

  • Opens Up The Kitchen – Kitchens can feel cramped and cluttered. Removing the upper cabinets opens up the space and allows more natural light to flood the room. It exposes the backsplash and countertops, which is usually the most expensive investment when it comes to renovating a kitchen. Why not show off your new countertops for a “wow” factor while entertaining?
  • Budget-Friendly – Cabinetry is not cheap. That’s why a kitchen with no upper cabinets is a great way to save money. It’s fewer materials and installation costs. We all know that can add up…quickly!
  • Minimalist Lifestyle: – The upper cabinets are a great place for storage. So without that added space will result in you having to cut down on kitchen supplies and accessories. You will have to prioritize the items you will actually use and the random items that you’ve collected over the years. Having no upper cabinets is a great opportunity to declutter and create a serene and minimalist kitchen.
  • Open Shelving – If you still need storage, then open-shelving is a great design hack. It still has the open feel, while keeping the functionality of cabinets. It’s also a great way to decorate the kitchen with greenery and other chic accessories.

An elegant kitchen with no upper cabinets will give the impression of being effortlessly clean and aesthetically appealing. You can achieve a cohesive look that is both functional and stylish by utilizing a light and airy color palette, base cabinets for storage, and statement lighting for an elevated finish.

How to Make Room for More Storage in The Kitchen

If you remove the upper cabinets for visual design purposes, then you need to have a plan for storage. Where will you be putting all of your kitchen accessories? Here are some of my tips for finding more room in your kitchen for storage.

  • Open Shelving – As mentioned before, open shelving is an easy technique for additional storage in the kitchen.
  • Base & Lower Cabinets – Prioritize your base cabinets for essential kitchen supplies including pots, pans, and dishware. Add drawers and pull-out bins to make the kitchen more efficient.
  • The Kitchen Island – The kitchen island isn’t just about a dramatic effect. It’s a great way to add storage including drawers and shelving to store serveware and other cooking essentials.
  • Pantry – If you’re lucky enough to have a pantry, then clean out a shelf or two for kitchen items that would normally go in your upper cabinets.  If you don’t have a pantry, then transform a closet or the corner of your kitchen into a place for additional storage. Wall-mounted Racks: Install wall-mounted racks to store your pots, pans, and utensils. You can also use them to store spices, oils, and other cooking essentials.
  • Invest in a Table – There are so many affordable tables at Wayfair and Pottery Barn that can be excellent pieces for storage. Buffet tables can be used to store dishes, glassware, and other kitchen supplies while adding style and elegance to your kitchen.

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
