The history of the Cliveden House is pretty interesting.. Apparently the estate was commissioned by the second Duke of Buckingham in 1666 for the purpose of serving as a getaway home for him and his mistress, Anna Maria, the married Countess of Shrewsbury. As the story goes, word got out about the affair and Anna Maria’s husband ultimately died after challenging the Duke to a duel, which he lost. Despite his victory, the Duke never ended up with Anna Maria due to the King’s interference. However, he went ahead with construction of the Cliveden House and it was completed in 1687.
So classic! If it’s good enough for Meghan, it’s good enough for me – ha!
