DESIGNER MARY MCDONALD CLEANSES THE COLOR PALETTE

Modern California French country kitchen by Mary McDonald grey and white herringbone floor marble counter tops

Designer Mary McDonald has done it again.  This time in a home in Los Angeles.

The project is featured in the September issue of House Beautiful magazine…out on newsstands next week.   I am so thrilled to have the exclusive preview of this Mary McDonald imagined home here on COCOCOZY!  Woohooo!

In this home, interior designer Mary was working for a couple in their early 30’s who are both lawyers and have children.  Mary’s goal with this project was to lighten and brighten the space.  She is calling the style of this re-imagined house “a clean modern California take on French country with a teeny bit of industrial sparseness”.

Apparently before the remodel, the home was dreary and dark.  Mary infused light and life into the home with a soft color palette of ivory, oatmeal, beige, gray, and taupe, with hints of lavender, aqua, and celadon.

For me , the kitchen is the jewel of this home…with Carrara marble counters, white cabinetry, except for the center island which is dark charcoal and then there is the fantastic gray and white chevron pattern floor made in an engineered stone tile.  Love!

What do you think of this Mary McDonald designed Los Angeles home…do you like this cleansed color palette?  Which room is your fave?  Comment below!  I want to hear your take.

Thank you SA and House Beautiful for giving me the sneak peek on this magazine feature.  Can’t wait to pick up the magazine and see the rest next week!

Happy Wednesday!

It’s lovely but a real departure to her signature panache and punchy style. Perhaps her personal life is reflected on the new streamlined approach but I like her wooden chevron floors – that is still a constant!

Ohhh I wouldn’t have known this was by Mary McDonald. But the chevron painted floors is a definitely nod to her. I ove this palette. These are my colours.

I am enamored with the soft palette. It must feel serene in a warm climate like southern California.

Whitewashed Wow! Very cool, light, and airy. And that floor makes the kitchen.

This is a lovely post. Do you know which white paint colors were used on the kitchen walls and cabinets? Thank you so much.

To me, there is nothing WRONG with the decor, but it’s just way too dull for me. I need color in my life! These soft colors are putting me to sleep.

It is beautiful, and the color scheme is elegant and timeless, but I am a little bored. With seemingly no personal items, collected pieces, or distinctive art, it seems somehow generic. It looks like the designer just walked out of the room.

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
