KITCHEN WEEK: MAKING A SPLASH WITH MOSAICS!

May 5, 2011

kitchen with white cabinets and drawers, stainless appliances and black and white tile walls

KITCHEN WEEK keeps on cooking (sorry…cliche…trite…I know…but you know me…can’t help myself)!

So I’ve been enjoying having a little design focus this week so much that KITCHEN WEEK will extend through Sunday…a full 7 days instead of the 5 days that I promised earlier in the week. So it seems the notion of some order in my hectic life is actually inspiring me to be slightly even more productive. Well who knew? (Please once again do not answer…I know you will all just say, “Coco…of course being organized and having a plan will make you more productive…hello?…who are you?…how could you not know this?” For fear of what you might answer…I hereby make the “Well who knew?” question completely and entirely rhetorical)

So…back to being focused…kitchens…yes kitchens…

I love an intricately designed mosaic ceramic tile backsplash! Especially love a mosaic tile with a Moroccan feel. Hence, I absolutely adore this image of an all white kitchen with a detailed mosaic backsplash that goes all the way to the ceiling! This idea works with either dark or light cabinetry I think. As long as everything else in the kitchen is very simple, I think a mosaic backsplash with lots of detail can make the space!

Here’s a look at a few mosaic tiles I’m loving right now…need another kitchen to remodel. I want this in my kitchen!

A mosaic tile with a graphic blue, white and green pattern on it

Mosaic House – Darj – $116 per piece (11.75″x11.75″ mosaic ceramic tile)(above)
Mosaic tile with a white, lavender and brown star pattern
Mosaic House – Mogador – $136 per piece (13.25″x13.25″) (above)

What do you think of mosaics on your kitchen walls? Just right or too much? What is your ideal backsplash look?

Happy Thursday!

Mine is a mirrored back splash….I absolutely love it. People ask if it is hard to clean, but really, just a little Windex…super easy.

I have a mosaic on my kitchen walls -it’s a minimalistic kitchen, the mosaic is 6 cm wide. It looks cool!

My back splash for the moment is the same as my granite though it actually looks really nice. Once we are done with the remodel and have some free budgeting again we plan to replace the counters with polished concrete (my husband’s specialty) and a new back splash. The mosaic is a bit out of my liking, however that kitchen is lovely.

I usually like a backsplash but sometimes it’s better without. I do however LOVE this photo! I love the black with the white on white- it gives it a really nice illusion without being too much. I have to give you some credit Coco- I didn’t used to like white on white so much until reading your blog. Thank you for inspiring me!

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤

This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millo This St Germain apartment, designed by Félix Millory @felixmillory , is defined by two things: a tightly controlled material palette and a sculptural art collection that runs through every room without exception.
Travertine frames every doorway. Dark smoked oak covers the joinery and cabinetry. Grey marble runs across the kitchen counters and island. Within that framework, figurative sculptures on the shelves, a large totemic piece at the entrance, stone forms on the dining table, a large-format artwork in the kitchen. Every room has at least one object that demands your attention. 🗿
→ Save this if you’re designing around a sculpture collection.
