Malibu Home Renovation Video – Exterior Color Dilemma

June 25, 2015
  • Share

Renovation video update.  Today I bring you a quick video with a last minute thought and dilemma that my guy TE and  I ran into this past weekend on our home renovation project in Malibu.  Stucco color. What to do? TE and I had made a choice and then something came up that took us by surprise. Take a look and tell me what you think!

BEFORE – HOME RENOVATION  – Side Exterior View (below)

Malibu Renovation Exterior Spanish Style House Before
Before – This is a picture of the side of house last year before we started the remodel. The home was Spanish built in the 70’s with small windows and a large overhang…slightly unbalanced.

DURING – HOME RENOVATION – SIDE VIEW OF HOUSE – TODAY (below)

Malibu Home Renovation Side Exterior View Cement Coat Stucco
Today – Side of home under construction with cement stucco coat up. Made us think about color again.
Spanish Style Home Exterior Lori Laughlin
Example of what we originally thought the house would look like on the exterior as far as color. A light exterior with a red tile roof. Classic Spanish style home here in California.

Truthfully…as of today…the dilemma is kind of over and we have decided to go back to our original thought. For a brief moment TE and I thought it would be very unique to do something different as the interior of the home is going to be a blend of contemporary, classic and rustic. But then we chatted with our stucco guy and thought about the how this very different color we toyed with might actually end up clashing a bit with some other choices we have made. Next week is the week the color changes…so who knows…we might change our mind again. Watch the video for the dilemma and weigh in!

Happy Thursday!

    Hi Coco,
    Some dilemma at this stage.
But…..the darker grey…..it can be fab, but in this setting, this type of house, I think NOT.
Besides this ‘professional view on it…..personally…I am done with the grey painted houses. The trend was there. ( I am not one to follow trends….I steer away from that) I never got all that grey on the exterior. Most of the time it does not work on a house. For me the curb appeal would almost always loose out.
BTW….some location and that view!!!! Great project…good luck. Keep us posted.

I like the lighter color but I’m no expert. Your home is stunning, you are so BLESSED–what a beautiful property and surrounding area–the view is amazing!! It’s absolutely gorgeous!

Most DEF go with the dark grey! Changing direction midway in a project happens ALL the time. if it didn’t somethings wrong! haha Anyway, thats my input. It looks amazing!

I like the light stucco for the exterior of your house. You’re in CA – the lighter color will look great on a sunny or cloudy day – especially with tjhe modern/contempory/rustic interior. Your house may look a bit foreboding in the darker shade.

I agree with the lighter color and not the dark grey. Lighter is fitting for the home and location. Loving the updates! your process helps me learn more 🙂

When I first saw the dark grey I thought, I love that color! I just wasn’t sure of it with the roof! Your house is going to look beautiful whatever you choose!

I think a lighter cocoa color (taupe) blends well with the surroundings. The very light finish of the original house seems too light. The grey is definitely too dark. Good luck with it. The house and setting is amazing.

I think dark gray (or any dark color, really only works well contrasted with white. Something needs to offset the heaviness of it. So if you have trim around the windows that will be white, that may work.I love gray and had my previous home painted in BM dark gray(sorry don’t have my paint deck here:() in your situation however, given the setting, you don’t want the house to look like a large dark lump amongst the green and blue of the ocean and sky.

My personal and professional opinion. Hope it helps!
I am loving your choices all along the way on this project btw, and it’s been amazing that you’re videotaping the process. It’s going to be gorgeous!!!

i think you should stick with the lighter color- i did a total renovation on a 1927 mediterranean in northern ca and didn’t stick with the White-ish color that all of the other homes have in my neighborhood but i still stayed light- its a light dijon mustard isn color with dark brown trim – i just think the dark grey scratch coat color is forcing it too much

A darker color will be harder to cool down ($$$ and environmental concerns). Will not reflect the sun to the extent a lighter color will.

The same thing happened to us! We loved the scratch coat grey. Our intention was mossy green and we did end up going with it in the end and I am so happy we did. So I am suggesting a mossy greenish grey! The stucco was from El Ray and the color we choose was Agave or Beach (can’t recall) http://www.elrey.com/parexusa-color-collection.shtml Otherwise go with your light color. I agree with the majority of posts. But the greenish grey is wonderful with all other colors! Patio furniture cushions fabrics, ironwork, wood…all looks good against it. Just as in nature!

Green foliage looks great against dark grey and the house won’t be glarey in the sun as you look up from the pool. I’d go dark.

We had the exact same dilemma at the exact same stage! Our house has black windows with black metal & glass garage doors – we were planning on a creamy white stucco, and we had stone that has some gray and black in it. The scratch coat went up and it made us re-think the stucco color.

Ultimately, we stuck with the white stucco – and I am so glad. We incorporated dark gray in the fascia/soffit color and we are powder coating the exposed steel posts in dark gray as well. We also incorporated dark gray in the patio material and I plan on using dark gray outdoor furniture.

There isn’t one right way… but you don’t have to change your stucco color to incorporate the gray color that you like.

    Coco,

I would stay with your original plan of light stucco. Choose timeless & simple! Your house is gorgeous. Can’t wait to see more of your choices coming along.

No to the darker grey. Go with the original. The original goes better; it looks better with the exterior setting and feels better with Malibu.

    Hi Coco,

What a beautiful home with that breathtaking view! This is going to be awesome when you’re done with it! I think that you should keep to your original plan. I like the example of the creamy white in the above photo. The contrast is beautiful with the windows and it fits into that stunning California landscape. Good luck with your decision and the rest of the reno. I’m sure that whatever you end up with will be perfect…..I cannot wait to see it when it’s finished!

    All the best,

I love grey in lap siding on a Nantucket style home but not in stucco. For some reason it can look too institutional. Your property is so beautiful and I like your original choice which is in keeping with house style.

You both have the most perfect site for your new home. As an interior designer for over 25 years. I would go with the lighter shade…
The one on the right side.

I am a big believer in maintaining the integrity of the most beautiful site.
I would go light especially with the dark

Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles an Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles and fancy things to make your house a home. In this picture, a plant, two chairs I found at the flea market, a layered rug situation and some modern art...de-cluttered space can be equally as inviting as one filled with memories and treasures. If you are stuck with how to decorate, I say keep it simple. Purge and start with the basics. Full disclosure, this is a shot of my living room from a few years ago when I first moved in...I didn’t even have drapes up when this was taken. I have since added pieces and changed out furniture and added a 2nd sofa...but it started super simple and it was lovely back then. When the world is swirling around us and making no sense, how are you keeping things simple at home? #socococozy #bringstylehome #cococozy

Was in Paris, with my mom, enjoying her summer apartment in the middle of the 6th arrondissement. I had just left the U.K. visiting friends for a few days in London and the Cotswolds. None of us knew that this summer 2020 would be so different. Today, I can only hope this time of tumult and great divides leads somehow to a future of calm and harmony. Going backwards in time is not an option. Pushing forward is. Happy Sunday to you. Where were you last summer? Where do you imagine you’ll be next? Xoxo #socococozy #bringstylehome
