Posh Picnic Table Dinner Party

October 9, 2017
  • Share

I am throwing another dinner party at the house in a few weeks.  I have lived in this new house for almost two months.  My goal is to entertain regularly throughout the fall, winter, spring and summer. So far, I had a dinner for 44 friends and family when bestie AM was here…then a few weeks ago I had another alfresco dinner for 18 of my work friends.  In two weeks, I am having a few people over for I think a “Paella Party” (exact menu tbd!).  Anyhooo…going back in time a bit, I wanted to share with you the posh picnic table dinner party tabletop I pulled together a few weeks ago.  Idea was to throw a casual backyard barbecue feeling casual gathering…I of course had to crank it up a notch to design my table into a posh picnic table for a lovely al fresco dining experience in my courtyard!  I used my COCOCOZY Plaid Solid fabric in blue and white as the table runner and then the layering began…

BUILDING THE PICNIC TABLE SETTINGS

For 18 people, you can go a few different ways on setting tables.  You can do two different rectangular tables, round tables of 6 or in this case I decided to seat everyone on one long table in the courtyard at my house.  The long table is dramatic and lends to everyone feeling like they are together at one dinner party – or should I say posh picnic!

I love setting a beautiful table…I love layering all of the elements.  This fall, I am all about the blue and white tables.  So for this table, I found a bolt of the blue and white COCOCOZY Plaid Solid fabric over at our COCOCOZY office and just cut it up to make a long table runner down the center of a long table.

One trick I use is that I layer in regular napkins on an angle as “placemats”.  These act as a decorative element the table.  In this case I used some blue floral napkins that have a casual picnic style vibe.

Then came plates and a mix of striped and solid napkins.

The party started at sunset at 6p with cocktails for over an hour as people trickled in. A few speeches about our great team and then the buffet style dinner was served at around 7:45p.  My good work friend KS was in charge of the music…he did a great job.  TN, our assistant, was in charge of logistics…she did a great job too.  It was a team effort.  Everyone had a wonderful time! The last guest left at 11:30p.  Success!

My theory is if you set a beautiful table, they will have a good time.  Theory proven once again with this one!

P.S. I found some blue and white African fabric for my next dinner…I will either cut it up into a napkins or use it as a runner.  Wish me luck!

The best tables are the ones that invite people toThe best tables are the ones that invite people to sit down, stay awhile, and make memories. ✨
These are a few tablescapes I’ve created in my dining room, each one layered with pieces I love and little details that make the table feel special.
Mix your favorite plates, layer soft linens, add fresh flowers or greenery, and light a few candles. There’s no one right way to set a beautiful table. It should feel collected, welcoming, and uniquely yours.
Comment TABLE below and we’ll send you more tablescape ideas to inspire your next gathering.

Want a bedroom that feels cozy, warm, and invitingWant a bedroom that feels cozy, warm, and inviting? Start with these simple changes:
1. Layer your bedding. Mix sheets, a duvet, quilts, and throw blankets to create that plush, lived-in look.
2. Add warm lighting. Swap harsh overhead lighting for bedside lamps, sconces, or a statement light with a warm glow.
3. Bring in plenty of texture. Think linen, velvet, boucle, chunky knits, and soft rugs.
4. Keep the palette warm and calming. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and muted colors instantly make a room feel more restful.
5. Mix in natural materials. Wood, rattan, woven accents, and stone add warmth and character.
6. Make the walls feel personal. Art, photographs, or even a statement headboard can make the room feel more finished.
7. Add something organic. A vase of branches, fresh flowers, or a little greenery can bring the room to life.
The goal isn’t to make your bedroom perfect. It’s to make it feel like a place you actually want to retreat to at the end of the day.
Save this for your next bedroom refresh. 🤎

The right chandelier doesn’t just light a room, it becomes the room. Scale, material, placement. When it’s done right, everything else arranges itself around it.

Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive.Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive. 🌸
One thing I’ve learned is that every outdoor space needs a focal point. It gives your eye a place to land and makes the whole space feel more intentional.
In this courtyard, the bougainvillea naturally becomes that focal point, adding color, height, and movement without overwhelming the space.
If you’re designing your own patio or garden, start with one standout feature, then let everything else support it.
Save this tip for your next outdoor project. ✨

Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surr Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surrey, restored back to its former grandeur.
Grade II listed and stripped of most of its original character by previous owners, this 9,000 sqft home with seven bedrooms, and five bathrooms was brought back to life for a French-Swedish couple raising two young kids here. The brief: Parisian luxe with a Scandinavian twist, and a design calm enough to keep the grand proportions feeling intimate.
Covet Noir rebuilt what had been lost: full plasterwork, raised & fielded panels, a bespoke decorative ceiling, and added a cantilevered limestone staircase with Nero Marquina cabochon inlay in the entrance hall. The material palette leans into marble and alabaster, softened with boucle and brushed cottons, chosen to hold up to two kids and two dogs without losing the elegance. Antique furniture and architectural fittings were sourced throughout to keep the project sustainable, alongside ground source heating.
Grand bones, calm hand. This is the kind of restoration we could look at all day. 🤍
