See This House: Mid-Century Eichler Home in Silicon Valley

April 19, 2023
  • Share

Mid-century homes are making a comeback in 2023. As more people are transitioning into minimalist lifestyles, people are embracing Eichler homes and renovating them to create a new space for their modern lifestyle. The popular retro style began to rise in both interior design and fashion. Why are people attracted to this era? Is it nostalgia? I love how clean and fresh it looks while also using nature as decor elements. It’s a very innovative home design while maintaining mid-century styles that date back to the 50s in Los Angeles. See this house below.

Joseph Eichler, a real estate developer in California in the 1950s and 1960s, was one of the key builders responsible for the iconic design. He is known for bringing modern design to the middle class. He built over 11,000 houses in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. This home is one of his designs from 1962.

About the House

This house is called “Twin Gable House” located in Sunnyvale, California. The property, originally known as Plan OJ-1605, has been renovated by multiple owners since its original construction. Ryan Leidner Architecture refurbished the 2,200-square-foot space for a family of four with white interiors and an open floor layout. He focused on creating a beautiful and minimal space that is functional for a Californian family.

Mid-Century Home Design

The home renovation removed many layers. Ryan Leidner, the architect, prioritized the pristine minimalism of the original home. He removed the original shag carpet, mirrored walls, and outdated cabinetry. Leidner added exposed wood ceilings and beams. large sliding glass doors, and Carrara marble. He wanted to include a minimalist interior design style. And an indoor-outdoor floor layout to highlight the beautiful landscaping outside. The home has so much greenery. Why not show it off? Almost every room in the house has a view of the rich landscapes planned by Stephens Design Studio.

Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive.Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive. 🌸
One thing I’ve learned is that every outdoor space needs a focal point. It gives your eye a place to land and makes the whole space feel more intentional.
In this courtyard, the bougainvillea naturally becomes that focal point, adding color, height, and movement without overwhelming the space.
If you’re designing your own patio or garden, start with one standout feature, then let everything else support it.
Save this tip for your next outdoor project. ✨

Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surr Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surrey, restored back to its former grandeur.
Grade II listed and stripped of most of its original character by previous owners, this 9,000 sqft home with seven bedrooms, and five bathrooms was brought back to life for a French-Swedish couple raising two young kids here. The brief: Parisian luxe with a Scandinavian twist, and a design calm enough to keep the grand proportions feeling intimate.
Covet Noir rebuilt what had been lost: full plasterwork, raised & fielded panels, a bespoke decorative ceiling, and added a cantilevered limestone staircase with Nero Marquina cabochon inlay in the entrance hall. The material palette leans into marble and alabaster, softened with boucle and brushed cottons, chosen to hold up to two kids and two dogs without losing the elegance. Antique furniture and architectural fittings were sourced throughout to keep the project sustainable, alongside ground source heating.
Grand bones, calm hand. This is the kind of restoration we could look at all day. 🤍

A — Warm wood beams and stone
B — Light and airy with floor-to-ceiling windows
A great vaulted ceiling doesn’t just add height. It changes how a room feels entirely. The best ones make you stop, look up, and never want to leave.

Before you start moving furniture, ask yourself thBefore you start moving furniture, ask yourself these three questions:
Does this improve the room’s function?
Does it create a better focal point?
Does it make the space easier to walk through?
If the answer is “no” to all three, maybe it’s just the rearranging itch talking. 😅
Save this for the next time you’re tempted to move every piece of furniture in your house.

A 90s home in Amman, Jordan, entirely remodelled by local artisans. Neo-Florentine bones, Levant-eclectic sensibility, arched passageways, and a flea-market-meets-commissioned-art collection that makes every wall feel intentional.
What makes it work: restraint where you’d expect excess, and boldness where you’d expect safety.
This is what happens when a home is built by people who actually know the place. 🖤
Save this, it’s a masterclass in culturally rooted design.
