TILE FILE: READING BETWEEN THE DARK GROUT LINES!

February 23, 2011
  • Share

Eat in kitchen with white subway tile walls and backsplashes with dark grout, knotty wood floor, grey cabinets and drawers, an island with a marble counter top and two pendant lights

Another kitchen to analyze and dissect. I like this country house kitchen for some reason too…again…not my typical white kitchen with clean lines…this one in fact has many lines…dark grout used on the subway tiled walls and backsplashes.

I like. Something sort of rustic about it all.

I would use this technique in the kitchen of my second country house…see yesterday’s post re: my first non-existent country house.

Eat in kitchen with subway tile backsplash and walls with dark grout, long wood table, reclaimed wood seats with wicker backs and seats, a chandelier, floating shelves, pendent lights and a large clock

What do you think about dark grout lines and this kitchen? Do tell!

Happy Wednesday!

When we change out our kitchen tile, I know I want to use white subway tile, but I wasn’t sure about grout color- white or dark? I like the look of both, but think the dark grout is a risk. In this photo, it looks amazing! I agree it gives the kitchen a more rustic feel. But with this picture, I’m confused again! I might choose dark! Great post! 🙂

I like the contrast of the dark grout! I think it depends on what the goal is for the overall feeling of the space whether you go with dark or light.

It works because the design and decoration is simple. If there were a lot of color or pattern it would be too much, especially with the expanse of those walls.

For me , dark grout would be too busy visually. But that would be my only objection. In photos it adds character and looks very intentional and offhand.

Well, its easier to keep clean! We put a darker grout on the marble floor in our powder room…adds definition.

This kitchen is gorgeous. I could move in tomorrow, however, I think you would need a skilled grout person to pull this look off. I’d still opt for white but would be happy to visit.

Love it! It’s different, but not too outside-of-the-white-box. More organic looking, and would work very well in a house that leans more towards vintage modern than new modern. I’d love it in a house that’s surrounded by gardens with a lot of great exterior views…

Agree with Diana: it’s too busy. This kitchen is big enough that it works, but I personally would not use dark grout with the white tile. Indeed, I am a fan of the look that has no grout lines, as I find this easier to clean and visually more pleasing.

I like the look in this kitchen. It flows nicely with the cabinets. I think it depends on the overall look you are striving to achieve. I also like the look of a sterling gray grout when used on a floor with white tile. Much easier to clean too.

It’s different but it appeals to me. Plus it’s easier to clean. White grout is impossible to keep white. My parents tiled their beach house kitchen with navy tile and navy grout. Looks fantastic.

I like the dimension it gives and a certain quality to the tile that makes it pop. That said, I dont’ think I would personally opt for it in my own kitchen as the darkness would bother me and I would be forever feeling like its dirty and would go crazy! Beautiful kitchen however.

This is brilliant because dark grout is much more low-matainence than light. The natural light in this space makes ALL the difference. It’d be hard to pull this off in a poorly lit room. Its great though!!

I appreciate the overall look but I think, for myself, I would stick to a similar colour tile and grout. I agree that it definitely depends on the space and you’d want to be sure you have a great tile installer…any crooked lines would be super obvious!

first of all those chairs….my heart. I have a thing for chairs, especially handmade hickory chairs. I have one at my house in vermont and I cherish it. If you need a country home she wil be going on the market this spring!

I love the dark grout, it feels like glazed brick which I wouldn’t think I would like but I do, maybe because there is so much of it? Very architectural and chic.

I think this Kitchen is FAB ! I love these tiles i have just had a new Kitchen and have used a similar more raised brick effect white tile , because my kitchen is black gloss the dark grouting would not really stand out to creat the effect it has here, so instead i got a metro black brick and had a few randomly dotted within the white tiles it looks great and its a good way to jazz up a kitchen !!

Hi, I have also been exploring darker grout. I have a few more pics up @ http://holidayhouserules.typepad.com/house_rules/2011/02/same-old-images-but-look-closer-please.html

I agree that the darker grout makes things a little warmer, less sterile. I’m thinking off white or light gray with white subway tile. I am also not brave enough for black!

I totally don’t even mind the dark grout. It would be easier to keep clean if you’re looking at it from that vantage point. But, I favor the lighter grout the best. Both are good, but lighter is my fave!

I am not so crazy about darker grout…. I have had both white grout and darker on a bathroom floor; although the white grout shows the dirt quicker, it is no “easier to keep clean”, you just can’t SEE the dirt as well on the darker grout! The dirt is still there, however…. I feel that the dark grout rather looks dirty all the time.

Very contemporary and clean, with rustic touches. The dark grout makes it more graphic. A little too detailed for me but maybe it’s just the chairs. I really like the clean lines of the shelving and it’s a great space.

I posted almost the identical kitchen on my blog a few days ago. I had to go back & forth between the two to compare them a few times before I was sure they’re actually different.

Personally, I prefer white grout with white tiles, and lighter grout in general. But this is still quite a stunning kitchen!

Today is my birthday but...I don’t want to celeb Today is my birthday but...I don’t want to celebrate...I want to help.
I want to make a meaningful impact in our greater Los Angeles community suffering from the fires. I invite you to join me in transforming birthday wishes into support for one local organization on the ground in Pasadena/Altadena.
I have made a contribution today already to the LA Fire Relief Fund created by @victorybiblechurch in Pasadena. They are actively assisting families in need in both Pasadena and Altadena who have been affected by the devastating Eaton Fire.
Although I don't have a personal connection to Pastor DeCuir or the church, I was searching for an organization that is helping in the Altadena area. A well respected civil rights attorney I follow @leemerrittesq is on the ground helping the church members and community members with legal services in the wake of the fires. I hope by contributing to their efforts, we can extend a helping hand to those facing significant challenges during this difficult time
To donate, please visit their website at https://vbcpasadena.org/ (link in bio as well). Every contribution, no matter the size, brings hope and relief to those who need it most. Tell them you heard about them from me.
Your generosity to the Los Angeles community is the best birthday gift I could ask for.

Happy New Year! 🎉✨ As we step into this freshHappy New Year! 🎉✨ As we step into this fresh chapter, I’m reminded of the beauty of starting anew and I like recommitting to goals at the top of the year. Nothing set in stone but just an overall vision of what I'd like to do and who I would hope to help along the way.
This year, my mantra is: **dream big, act boldly, treasure the small joys, continue to lead with kindness and to have as much empathy as possible for others **. Just a few things...😂
I’m also deeply committed to helping people who follow along to achieve their dreams. I'll be curating captivating interior design inspiration with COCOCOZY that will hopefully give you ideas and dreams for your own space. I will also be empowering you to realize the value of your influence with Chirpyest by earning cash back for sharing and shopping. I hope to be open about the journey of the COCOCOZY product line. I want to share real time behind the scenes how the line is being built and how we are growing Chirpyest; both examples of the not so linear journey of building businesses from the ground up. I hope these stories spark you to push your own boundaries and shake out of your comfort zones.
Lastly, in 2025, I’m committed to surrounding myself with people who have a positive vibe about them while striving to be that same light for others. Luckily, I have a great start on this with an amazing family and fantastic group of friends - a fantastic support network.
My wish for you in 2025: May this year bring you clarity, courage, and the confidence to pursue all that makes you happy.
