Another kitchen to analyze and dissect. I like this country house kitchen for some reason too…again…not my typical white kitchen with clean lines…this one in fact has many lines…dark grout used on the subway tiled walls and backsplashes.
I like. Something sort of rustic about it all.
I would use this technique in the kitchen of my second country house…see yesterday’s post re: my first non-existent country house.
What do you think about dark grout lines and this kitchen? Do tell!
Happy Wednesday!

I actually like it. It give depth to the walls.
When we change out our kitchen tile, I know I want to use white subway tile, but I wasn’t sure about grout color- white or dark? I like the look of both, but think the dark grout is a risk. In this photo, it looks amazing! I agree it gives the kitchen a more rustic feel. But with this picture, I’m confused again! I might choose dark! Great post! 🙂
it reminds me a little of painted brick… which i absolutely adore.
I like the contrast of the dark grout! I think it depends on what the goal is for the overall feeling of the space whether you go with dark or light.

It works because the design and decoration is simple. If there were a lot of color or pattern it would be too much, especially with the expanse of those walls.
I love it… I did it in my recent kitchen remodel and am so happy with the way it looks 🙂
For me , dark grout would be too busy visually. But that would be my only objection. In photos it adds character and looks very intentional and offhand.
Well, its easier to keep clean! We put a darker grout on the marble floor in our powder room…adds definition.

Absolute love! Visually more interesting and easier to clean.
I’m not a fan of the look. It just doesn’t look “clean,” visually or literally.
I can see why it works and from a practical aspect, earier to keep clean, from a visual preference I prefer white grout…..this kitchen is beautiful.
This kitchen is gorgeous. I could move in tomorrow, however, I think you would need a skilled grout person to pull this look off. I’d still opt for white but would be happy to visit.
Love it! It’s different, but not too outside-of-the-white-box. More organic looking, and would work very well in a house that leans more towards vintage modern than new modern. I’d love it in a house that’s surrounded by gardens with a lot of great exterior views…
Agree with Diana: it’s too busy. This kitchen is big enough that it works, but I personally would not use dark grout with the white tile. Indeed, I am a fan of the look that has no grout lines, as I find this easier to clean and visually more pleasing.
I like the look in this kitchen. It flows nicely with the cabinets. I think it depends on the overall look you are striving to achieve. I also like the look of a sterling gray grout when used on a floor with white tile. Much easier to clean too.
Personally I wouldn’t care for it in my kitchen, but I think it works here.
It’s different but it appeals to me. Plus it’s easier to clean. White grout is impossible to keep white. My parents tiled their beach house kitchen with navy tile and navy grout. Looks fantastic.
I LOVE the dark grout. Keeps the room from being so ‘white’. Sure wish my white tiled bathrooms had the dark grout.
I like the dimension it gives and a certain quality to the tile that makes it pop. That said, I dont’ think I would personally opt for it in my own kitchen as the darkness would bother me and I would be forever feeling like its dirty and would go crazy! Beautiful kitchen however.
This is brilliant because dark grout is much more low-matainence than light. The natural light in this space makes ALL the difference. It’d be hard to pull this off in a poorly lit room. Its great though!!
I really find this kitchen quite soothing. Love the colors and the dark grout.
I really like it me thinks it adds a retro look to the otherwise truditional look of the kitchen …
I appreciate the overall look but I think, for myself, I would stick to a similar colour tile and grout. I agree that it definitely depends on the space and you’d want to be sure you have a great tile installer…any crooked lines would be super obvious!
This is my dream kitchen! Wishing I tiled my white octagon floor tile using dark grout…
first of all those chairs….my heart. I have a thing for chairs, especially handmade hickory chairs. I have one at my house in vermont and I cherish it. If you need a country home she wil be going on the market this spring!
I love the dark grout, it feels like glazed brick which I wouldn’t think I would like but I do, maybe because there is so much of it? Very architectural and chic.
i don’t like it
Just remodeled last year. I considered darker grout for my kitchen, but went with white for its clean, timeless look. I did use gray grout with white subway and marble tile in our bathrooms. Love it!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Thanks for sharing!
The dark grout doen’t look clean to me. I imagine white grout would be hard to keep clean, so I opt for the no-grout lines.

Amazing kitchen and nice wall tiles. It looks neat and pleasing to the eye. I like the design. Overall, nice arrangement.
I have been living without a backsplash for about a year now because I just can’t take the plunge. Subway tile or back painted glass? This stunning kitchen has me leaning back towards tile…big decisions.
Love this beautiful kitchen and the idea but not sure I could live with it forever – the dark grouting that is.
I have to admit, I haven’t been bold enough to try black grout yet:(
I think this Kitchen is FAB ! I love these tiles i have just had a new Kitchen and have used a similar more raised brick effect white tile , because my kitchen is black gloss the dark grouting would not really stand out to creat the effect it has here, so instead i got a metro black brick and had a few randomly dotted within the white tiles it looks great and its a good way to jazz up a kitchen !!
Hi, I have also been exploring darker grout. I have a few more pics up @ http://holidayhouserules.typepad.com/house_rules/2011/02/same-old-images-but-look-closer-please.html
I agree that the darker grout makes things a little warmer, less sterile. I’m thinking off white or light gray with white subway tile. I am also not brave enough for black!
I totally don’t even mind the dark grout. It would be easier to keep clean if you’re looking at it from that vantage point. But, I favor the lighter grout the best. Both are good, but lighter is my fave!

I am saving these photos for my kitchen reno – LOVE dark grout lines. Remember when those were stylish in such a totally different way in the 80’s? Square tiles, colored grout, glass block…
I am not so crazy about darker grout…. I have had both white grout and darker on a bathroom floor; although the white grout shows the dirt quicker, it is no “easier to keep clean”, you just can’t SEE the dirt as well on the darker grout! The dirt is still there, however…. I feel that the dark grout rather looks dirty all the time.
Very contemporary and clean, with rustic touches. The dark grout makes it more graphic. A little too detailed for me but maybe it’s just the chairs. I really like the clean lines of the shelving and it’s a great space.
I posted almost the identical kitchen on my blog a few days ago. I had to go back & forth between the two to compare them a few times before I was sure they’re actually different.
Personally, I prefer white grout with white tiles, and lighter grout in general. But this is still quite a stunning kitchen!
gorgeous kitchen! tons of character…the natural light & plants really add to it
I really love the way the dark grout looks in this kitchen. I’d like to try it out some day, but I’m not sure I’m brave enough just yet. Maybe when I reach Steven Gambrel’s design icon status….
Are the cabinets a true white?
Dark brown grout is a perfect complement to handmade, one-of-a-kind white subway tiles.
What size tiles do you think they are?
what color are the cabinets?
They look like some sort of soft off-white.
