DESIGN IDEA: WHITE WALLS FRAMED UP!

March 9, 2011
  • Share

Office with framed light blue print with birds and foliage, a white chair and a hot pink purse

I like this design idea to dress up an otherwise boring white wall…take some fabric or wallpaper you love and frame it. The idea is not new but it is executed oh so well by Vanessa De Vargas, owner of Los Angeles-based Turquoise Interior Design. She’s put a lovely light blue print with birds and foliage into a white frame and made it into art of sorts. Makes this little workspace so bright and cheerful. A way to bring in your favorite pattern or textile without covering an entire wall. Great for the wall color commitment-phobes like me.

Office with framed light blue print with birds and foliage, a white rolling chair with a hot pink purse hanging off the back, and a white bookshelf with folders and shoeboxes

Office with white cabinet with sliding door with a long drawer pull, a yellow lamp and a pot of tulips

Alternative view of the office with its framed wallpaper and white cabinet

What do you think of this tried and true design trick? What surface pattern would you want to try to frame to make an artistic impression on your walls?

Happy Wednesday!

Oh I love this look! I am a big fan of white walls but I love this touch of color. I would like to see something with a japanese inspired pattern maybe? I love all the graphic patterns lately too! – BOO

Gorgeous! Question for Vanessa…is this a DIY project or do you really need a professional? And if the latter, do you need someone that specializes in doing this or can any framer tackle this project? Thanks kindly for any replies!

What a great idea! I love it also because you could use more expensive fabric or wallpaper than you would/could normally afford for this small piece and it would provide a fantastic accent! Plus you can change your mind and change it for something else without the big commitment of a complete wall – fantastic!

I love that yellow lamp! Where can I find one (maybe in a different color)?

I love this idea and plan on doing something similar in my 4 yr old’s bedroom. And I just may do it in my office as well….it looks fantastic. The wallpaper Vanessa chose is so fresh and crisp. And of course I absolutely adore anything with birds on it!!

My dream is to have one studio wall covered with cork, then painted white, so that I could pin up all the things that inspire me, photos, articles, colors, poetry, bits of ribbon and sketches for work.

geometric patterns are fun. I love monochromatic geometric rugs, where the design will show but it’s more subtle. or else, all out, bright contrasts for fun and an energized room.

I love the idea of using a vintage mirror frame to house a cork board! I’ve been looking for something that will work in my girlie office, and I think that’s the ticket!

I’d love to know where the chair came from. Been looking at white Eames chairs all week, but want some ideas for alternatives. Love this space!

What a great way to add some spunk to plain white walls. Another great idea would be to add cork inside the framework. This would allow the boards to be functional as well as beautiful. Spectacular idea!

Sorry, I just can’t get used to this. The patterns and colors are wonderful, however, wallpaper and fabric art will always look like wallpaper and fabric .. cheap and tacky when framed. Nothing replaces REAl art in my book. Talent is everywhere and available to suit all budgets.

This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a This 300-year-old Belgian château redesigned by a French interior designer and architect, Nathan Litera @nathanlitera is a beautiful reminder that good design isn’t about replacing the past, but learning how to live with it. You see it in the preserved millwork, the original fireplaces, the parquet floors, and then in the quiet contrast of contemporary lighting, cleaner silhouettes, and restrained color.
The magic is in the balance. The newer pieces don’t compete with the architecture. They feel intentional, calm, and completely at ease. Nothing is overly styled. Nothing distracts. History stays front and center while the space still feels entirely livable today.
Here’s how to bring that same feeling into your own home:
* Keep your base timeless — neutral walls, classic materials, architectural details if you have them
* Let contrast do the work — modern lighting or furniture against traditional bones instantly updates a space
* Edit your palette — keep colors within a tight range and let texture and form do the talking
* Invest in materials — marble, wood, plaster. They age beautifully and never feel out of place
It’s not about recreating a château. It’s about understanding the feeling that quiet kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Save this for when you want your space to feel layered, timeless, and truly considered. ✨

Sharing with you a day in my life here in Paris. ESharing with you a day in my life here in Paris. Every day for the last few months has been the greatest day ever here. Even days that are not event filled feel special in Paris.
Started with French class on this day. I was taking classes at L'Alliance Français because living here means actually trying to belong here and speak the language.
Then off to the Hôtel de Crillon @rosewoodhoteldecrillon ,a historic palace hotel overlooking Place de la Concorde, known for its timeless interiors and quiet kind of luxury, catching up with a friend like it was the most ordinary thing...in extraordinary place.
So even though nothing momentous happened...wanted to show you what my every greatest day life looks like in Paris.
This city keeps surprising me. 🖤

A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not A soft touch of pink, layered into the space. Not overpowering, just enough to warm everything up, walls, upholstery, even the smallest details.
It shifts the mood completely. Calmer, softer, and a little more lived in.
Save this if you’re leaning toward softer, warmer spaces. 🌸

What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so What makes the Saint-Martin Apartment in Paris so hard to look away from is the deliberate clash Sophie Dries @sophiedries_ created and didn’t try to resolve.
The bones of the apartment are pure Haussmann: ornate cornicing, carved boiserie, a marble fireplace with a gilded mirror. Everything a 19th-century Parisian apartment should be. Then she placed a near-black dining table with brass-legged stools into the middle of it. A raw concrete-look bathroom behind the grandeur. Dark, sculptural objects on surfaces that were built for delicate things.
It works because she didn’t try to blend the two, she let them sit in contrast. The apartment feels lived-in and specific because of it.
→ Save this if you’re mixing old architecture with contemporary furniture.
