Surviving the Heat: a Fashionable Guide

August 9, 2019
  • Share

Ah, Summer the best season. The perfect time for vacation, road trips, extra time spent at the beach, and eating outside. As we are in the last stretch of summer, with nice warm August weather, summer fashion proves to be a never-ending struggle. Trying to dress stylishly without sweating can be almost impossible. While throwing on a pair of denim shorts and a t-shirt is simple, it doesn’t work for many occasions. Here is a guide for how to survive a summer heatwave while looking sensational whether you are meeting a friend for dinner or traveling through Europe!

Summer as much as I love you I could do without the heatwaves. Nothing is worse than wearing a gorgeous summer outfit and feeling like you are melting. Anyone struggle with summer fashion as much as I do? It wasn’t until a few years ago that I discovered the secrets to staying cool and put together. During some of my travels, I picked up that linen is a very popular fabric in hot parts of the world. The Incredible thing about linen is that it is so versatile and can be dressy. Who would have thought? In addition to my favorite clothing picks, I also included some accessories and beauty products to make sure you stay as put together as possible.

Mara Hoffman – Sylvia Belted Linen Midi Dress | Reformation – Toulouse Off the Shoulder Fit and Flare Dress | Agua by Agua Benita – Naturalia Coral Printed Cross-Back Linen Dress

DRESSES

An array of casual and dressy linen dresses is my secret for looking effortless during a heatwave. A nice mid-length is flattering and comfortable. There are so many great styles out this season! The white Mara Hoffman dress could be dressed up or dressed down. It can make for a crisp work outfit or styled casually for running errands. The Reformation dress is perfect for a weekend of activities, and the Benita dress is a great option for a dinner out or a more formal occasion.

Three Graces London – Angelique Striped Linen-Blend Top | Deveaux – Roden Collared Linen Top | Rails – Marley Tie Front Linen Blend Blouse

Finding the perfect linen blouse can be a challenge. The secret is not stopping until you find something that fits just right. Finding your favorite silhouettes in linen will be a game-changer. I love bright linen tops or patterned options, but a light white button-down is always a great choice.

June & Hudson – Tie Front Linen Blend Pants | Max Mara – High-Waisted Cropped Linen Pants | VINCE – Stretch Cotton & Linen Wide Leg Trousers

Linen trousers are a summer staple in my closet. These brands have perfected the dressy linen pant! There are so many incredible options in various colors and patterns. I lean towards a very crisp white linen pant but it’s fun to mix it up too. They wick away sweat with ease and add the perfect amount of cool to any look.

Cuyana – Panama Hat | Cuyana – Summer Hat

If you are planning on sitting out in the sun for an extended period of time a hat is needed. No one wants a sunburned scalp. It also helps keep the sun off of your face – preventing wrinkles! Whether you are headed to the beach or sitting outside at brunch a light summer hat is a great investment piece.

Alia – 54mm Cat Eye Sunglasses | Warby Parker – Larson Sunglasses | Kate Young – Rosalba Cat-Eye Acetate Sunglasses

Where would I be without sunglasses? They are simply a daily necessity. I always have at least one pair in my bag at all times. Here are three very cute options at various price points! I find it best to at least invest $50 into a pair. The inexpensive pairs always scratch and break so easily.

Caudalie – Beauty Elixir | Ursa Major – Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant | Kiehl’s Since 1851 – Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 30 | Supergoop! – Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40

I often opt out of wearing a lot of makeup on hot days. I’ll stick to a CC cream and some long-wearing products. There are a few things I always keep on hand during hot spells: a face mist, deodorant, SPF lip balm, and sunscreen. The face mist is very refreshing and gives your makeup a boost. Deodorant is a no brainer. If yours starts to wear off you have it! Impromptu beach trips, the gym, or a hike could all lead to needing to reapply. Best to have on hand! SPF is incredibly important to keep your skin safe when the UV rays are exceptionally high. I love to make sure I have a face + neck sunscreen at the very least. Another thing many people forget about is lip balm – sunburned lips are easily avoidable! This Kiehl’s one comes in a variety of tints to keep your lips looking great all day.

S’well – Water Bottle | Everlane – 100% SF Tote

The most important thing to remember is a reusable water bottle. You never have to worry about having to purchase an emergency plastic water bottle and most places will fill up your water bottle no question asked. It is the best tip for keeping cool and hydrated – which in turn keeps you looking good. Another thing I find helpful is carrying a reusable canvas bag instead of my normal bag. It has extra room for beauty products and water. Also, they are much lighter and don’t stick to your skin. I think this Everlane tote is very classic and cute.

I hope you are inspired by this post to go out and add as much linen to your wardrobe as possible! I would never survive 90-100 degree days without it. And remember, linen can be professional and dressy too! If you can’t get enough summer fashion check out my post on delicate white lace tops!

Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles an Keep it simple. No need for bells and whistles and fancy things to make your house a home. In this picture, a plant, two chairs I found at the flea market, a layered rug situation and some modern art...de-cluttered space can be equally as inviting as one filled with memories and treasures. If you are stuck with how to decorate, I say keep it simple. Purge and start with the basics. Full disclosure, this is a shot of my living room from a few years ago when I first moved in...I didn’t even have drapes up when this was taken. I have since added pieces and changed out furniture and added a 2nd sofa...but it started super simple and it was lovely back then. When the world is swirling around us and making no sense, how are you keeping things simple at home? #socococozy #bringstylehome #cococozy
Pre-pandemic throw back photo to where I was last Pre-pandemic throw back photo to where I was last year. Clueless as to what was to come. Was in Paris, with my mom, enjoying her summer apartment in the middle of the 6th arrondissement. I had just left the U.K. visiting friends for a few days in London and the Cotswolds. None of us knew that this summer 2020 would be so different. Today, I can only hope this time of tumult and great divides leads somehow to a future of calm and harmony. Going backwards in time is not an option. Pushing forward is. Happy Sunday to you. Where were you last summer? Where do you imagine you’ll be next? Xoxo #socococozy #bringstylehome
Incredible living room before and after as designe Incredible living room before and after as designed by my good friend Steve Jones @bettershelter! I went on a tour today. I also went on a tour a year ago when he first got the house. See my stories. Swipe to see what this room looked like before. Life lesson from a room transformation: When faced with the daunting and not so pretty, look to do the work, and you can make changes to bring out what is good. Right? This home by the way is going on the market soon and is in one of my favorite parts of town, View Park. What changes have you made lately that have turned bad into good? #socococozy #bringstylehome #remodeling #homerenovation #californiadreaming

Am in my living room right now looking at these pretty flowers in that white urn I found lying around. The urn works (see Flower Power highlights for backstory). Thinking on who I might send one of these bouquets to today as a little act of kindness. Still working on the patience piece of her advice! 🤪 Who might you send flowers to? How can you be more patient with yourself? Happy Saturday!
