7 Modern Staircase Designs With A Unique Twist

July 12, 2023
  • Share

Modern staircases are both functional and necessary when it comes to any home, but they also play a part in a home’s aesthetic. Staircases can act as the main focal point in a foyer, something to really “wow” your guests when they first enter your home. While a first thought about staircases could be that they simply bring you from one floor to another, there are so many different styles. With different structures, shapes, and materials, a staircase can really add character to any interior. With the staircase as the base of any entryway or foyer, you can decorate it to accent the stairs. Follow along below to see 7 staircase design ideas that are sure to leave you all inspired.

1850s Restored Wood Staircase

The featured image is a beautiful design from a Greek Revival home in Upstate New York. Sometimes old is just as good as new…maybe even better! The dark wood staircase adds a unique contrast to the off-white wall color. And we can’t ignore that dramatic chandelier by Murano Palmette. A beautiful combination of old mixed with new design.

The more contemporary staircase features a curved staircase wall with brass and iron spindles. The entryway is a minimalist style so Flannigan added a round white fluted table with an off-white linen skirted cube stool. It’s a clean and fresh look.

The wooden staircase design is a gem within this serene Lake Geneva home. The railings are made with custom wrought iron. The unique design gives an antique European feel with a modern twist.

What is a Popular Modern Staircase Style?

The most popular modern staircase trends include glass and metal finishings such as balustrades and railings.

Interior designers and architects are investing in glass paneling to create open-concept style staircase designs. The classic iron steel railings are still popular in 2023. However, more people want a minimalist-style railing.

Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive.Summer is when this courtyard really comes alive. 🌸
One thing I’ve learned is that every outdoor space needs a focal point. It gives your eye a place to land and makes the whole space feel more intentional.
In this courtyard, the bougainvillea naturally becomes that focal point, adding color, height, and movement without overwhelming the space.
If you’re designing your own patio or garden, start with one standout feature, then let everything else support it.
Save this tip for your next outdoor project. ✨

Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surr Design by @covetnoir. A 1750 Georgian home in Surrey, restored back to its former grandeur.
Grade II listed and stripped of most of its original character by previous owners, this 9,000 sqft home with seven bedrooms, and five bathrooms was brought back to life for a French-Swedish couple raising two young kids here. The brief: Parisian luxe with a Scandinavian twist, and a design calm enough to keep the grand proportions feeling intimate.
Covet Noir rebuilt what had been lost: full plasterwork, raised & fielded panels, a bespoke decorative ceiling, and added a cantilevered limestone staircase with Nero Marquina cabochon inlay in the entrance hall. The material palette leans into marble and alabaster, softened with boucle and brushed cottons, chosen to hold up to two kids and two dogs without losing the elegance. Antique furniture and architectural fittings were sourced throughout to keep the project sustainable, alongside ground source heating.
Grand bones, calm hand. This is the kind of restoration we could look at all day. 🤍

A great vaulted ceiling doesn’t just add height. It changes how a room feels entirely. The best ones make you stop, look up, and never want to leave.

Before you start moving furniture, ask yourself thBefore you start moving furniture, ask yourself these three questions:
Does this improve the room’s function?
Does it create a better focal point?
Does it make the space easier to walk through?
If the answer is “no” to all three, maybe it’s just the rearranging itch talking. 😅
Save this for the next time you’re tempted to move every piece of furniture in your house.

A 90s home in Amman, Jordan, entirely remodelled by local artisans. Neo-Florentine bones, Levant-eclectic sensibility, arched passageways, and a flea-market-meets-commissioned-art collection that makes every wall feel intentional.
What makes it work: restraint where you’d expect excess, and boldness where you’d expect safety.
This is what happens when a home is built by people who actually know the place. 🖤
Save this, it’s a masterclass in culturally rooted design.
