FORMER KATHARINE HEPBURN ESTATE ON MARKET!

August 8, 2011

aerial view of katharine hepburn's waterfront connecticut home

The former estate of the late film and stage star Katharine Hepburn is listed for sale by Sothebys International Realty for $28 million!  $28 million to live in a home that once belonged to a legendary Academy Award winning actress…what do you think?

The home is located on the water in the Fenwick section of Old Saybrook, Connecticut. It boasts 6 bedrooms and 7 baths in just under 8500 square feet. The home sits on 3.4 acres of land and is surrounded by waters of the Long Island sound.

Hepburn built the home and lived in it for over 65 years.  It was most recently owned and renovated by a NYC developer.

Nautical theme foyer with white staircase, light wood floor, blue, white and red rug, white wicker chairs and a view of the living room
White living room with sea grass rug, dueling sofas, a white oval upholstered ottoman and a coffered ceiling
Kitchen with white cabinets, light wood floor, a white island surround by white stools with sea grass chairs, a farmhouse sink, a chandelier and a sea grass rug
White master bedroomwith a light wood floor, bench style ottoman at the foot of the bed, a fireplace and a picture window with a view of the Long Island Song
Bedroom with light wood floor, exposed brick walls, striped upholstered armchair and ottoman, a black chest and a large picture window with a view of the Long Island Song. There is a smaller window with a window seat and encasement windows to the left of the picture window.
Private dock with metal chairs with white cushions and a large white umbrella

If I had a cool $28 million, I might move to Connecticut.  Would you want to live in a screen legend’s historic estate or would you rather build a new one of your own?  What do you think of this house?

Happy Monday!

I LOVE the house! But 28 mil? Nah… I’d build my dream home and for much less. 🙂

    Have a great week!

The location along with the legend look fantastic but in my opinion the fact it has been ‘renovated’ by someone else is a big no no !!

Beautiful house and location. Too much white! Renovation needs more color and personality.

Wow, this home is GORGEOUS. It looks so clean, yet so welcoming and cozy at the same time. I’m so inspired by white homes!

Bland & too much white. I’m quite sure Katherine would not have liked it.
$28m…it will sit on the market a long time. and then the first the new owners will do is add a pop of colour!

The house would be too big to live in but to have that kind of money to spend would be a dream. I’ve always been a huge fan of Katharine Hepburn and would love to see her home. I wonder if there are pictures, that are available to see, before it was remodeled. My name is spelled like Katharine Hepburn, so when people would say, that is a weird spelling I’d say well Katharine Hepburn spelled it that way. lol

What a complete makeover … it makes me a bit sad though – they really ripped out all the things that made it hers. Take a look at photos from when she lived there…you would never know this was the same place. Granted it was in need of a pick me up but that could have been done and left some soul in the place. Couldn’t they have done their white storm somewhere else? I think the great Kate would HATE this reno.

Despite the removal of the Hepburn legacy, it looks like a comfortable house. But, of course, I would build.

I love it. Even though it is huge the way it is furnished makes it so welcoming and livable. The kitchen is beautiful and welcomes many people to be together. I love the bedroom with the seat in the window, it’s gorgeous. I think the white perfectly shows off those things that aren’t white, views, brick walls. A very livable palace!

This house is gorgeous! I’ve always loved the beachy, comfortable feel of the East Coast. Would it be alright if I share a link to this post on my blog?

Typical ugly interior designer look; icey cold. Why do people move to country house in the country and then want the inside to look like a NY apartment. Katherine would NEVER live in it like that. Her taste was much better.

Upsetting to see it so modernised as I am sure it had all its own charm before when the legend actually lived there.. it just looks like any other modernised home.. The views from the windows are lovely, but otherwise it looks cold and detached and not homely or loved.. sad to see… but the price is also exorbitant, as for living in the same home..well it isnt any longer the home that Katharine lived in.. just the bones..

Did you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-ÉlyséeDid you know one Sunday a month, the Champs-Élysées closes to traffic entirely?
No cars. Just people, walking straight down the center with the Arc de Triomphe ahead. Then I walked home over The Seine. It had just rained, and the sky was doing something extraordinary. And of course, the Eiffel Tower showed up right on cue.
Paris on a quiet Sunday is something else. 🖤
