Inspiration

A Beautiful Haitian Toile Collection at Schumacher

June 24, 2022
  • Share

Victor Glemaud, a Haitian American fashion designer, released a collaboration with Schumacher. Glemaud’s collection is called Cul-de-sac, which is inspired by his Caribbean heritage and his family. It features 14 different patterns and colors. After studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he worked at Paco Rabanne and Tommy Hilfiger prior to launching his own company.

One of the fabrics I want to highlight from the new collection is the Toussaint toile. Toile became popular in the late eighteenth century. It originated in Ireland but became a popular decor accent in Britain and France. Glemaud’s collection pays homage specifically to Toussaint Louverture, a Haitian general and leader of the Haitian Revolution. The fabric also includes foliage and landscapes inspired by the country.

Some of you might be familiar with Sheila Bridge’s Harlem Toile. She incorporated African-American historic narratives into pattern fabrics. Glemaud created his own twist by designing Toile with Haitian narratives, flowers, and other inspiration.

The word toile is French for linen cloth.

My friend Amy Beaupré from college texted me about the collection. She is a designer at Annie Elliott Design in D.C. Amy knows I have a personal connection to Haiti. My mother is from Haiti and came here in the 1960s. I have always been aware of Haitian culture. After seeing the collection, I decided to order a few sample options. I’m thinking of making pillows but wasn’t sure which color option to go with.

Recently, the New York Times wrote an article about the history of Haiti. They were the first country to be freed from France and were once an affluent country that produced coffee and sugar. However, with their freedom came a large amount of debt to France and other western civilizations. Their debt has impacted Haiti for over 100 years and has prevented the country from building infrastructure and institutions. According to the New York Times, Haiti has paid over $560 million and lost over $21 billion in economic growth. If you’re looking to learn more about Haiti’s history then I recommend reading the full article here: New York Times article.

This 300m² Haussmannian duplex in central Paris wa This 300m² Haussmannian duplex in central Paris was designed to function as both a home and a gallery and the distinction between the two is impossible to find.
Every room treats art and objects with the same weight as furniture, nothing is decorative for its own sake, everything is placed with intention.
The Haussmannian bones, ornate cornicing, herringbone parquet, original stained glass ceiling, stay intact throughout. Natural and handcrafted materials do the rest.

So proud of my dear friend Kristi Bender and her b So proud of my dear friend Kristi Bender and her business partner Wendy Schwartz on the launch of Petal Promenade for @cuff_studio. 👏
This new collection feels like such a beautiful evolution. Inspired by their Manhattan Flower District showroom, it brings together the romance of classic decorative arts with a fresh, modern perspective in a way that feels bold, artistic, and incredibly thoughtful.
If you are attending ICFF 2026, make sure to stop by Booth W1048 and experience Petal Promenade in person. Congratulations, Kristi and Wendy. This collection is truly something special. ✨
